Come to Cranks, a community bike workshop on Chapel Street in Kemptown. Open Tuesday evening 3ish til 8ish, Friday and Saturday 11ish til 5ish.
It was set up for just what you describe, to help people learn about their bikes and how to look after them! Working on a donation basis it turns out a lot cheaper than a bike shop too.
We've got a board of tools, and plenty of time to help you get rolling. If you need advice on which parts to buy (it may be best to check before shelling out) then we're happy to help with that too.
