mdcc_tester, it's ok to have a steel frame at the track. There is no climbing involved so weight is not a real issue. For some races it is required to ride a steel bike (NJS). But for riding outside in the wind, up hills and mountains, it's much better to use a lightweight frame and fork. Because I ride longer distances on my fixed I wan't a lightweight frame I can easily push up a hill. I'm trying to make myself lightweight by cycling and going to the gym but my bicycle has to loose some weight as well.
Besides, alu looks better.
For riding longer distances you'll want steel, it's generally more comfy.
Also steel is really not inferior, not hard to cover long distance or ride up hills on.
