From my physics course 20 years ago heat is due to resistance, so larger guage wire, better conductors, better joints and so forth should reduce the heat.

To put it another way a better plug is unlikely to make it worse, if fitted correctly.

I opened it up and the plug looks fine. I'll just run it lower until it melts or I replace it next winter (or summer in this country).
