you can always run a double chainring but skip the FD completely. I've done this with a triple and just replaced the outer ring with a bashguard. It's not hard to shift between rings manually. I've even read tales of touring cyclists that used to do this on the move by using a spare spoke.
Done this way you can mix and match whatever combo suits rather than something that needs to match FD capacity/shape.
