  • Scarp 1 may also be a perfectly reasonable answer to the thread title too but I have not tried one... yet!
    Dat grey:

  • Based on my experience with the scarp2 I would suggest that it is eminently suitable (very well made, sturdy, lightweight and easy to pitch)

  • Laser Comp is basically the answer to this thread.
    Great, light, strong tent.

    This.

Although quite happy with my MSR when I got it for £186.

  • Just need to replace the toothpicks they supply as pegs on the Laser comp though. Its very hackable too - I have to find the link that shows this.

  • First post in this thread. Also a long time since I posted in these forums. First of al thanks to everyone who contributed to the great walls of info and laughs in here.

I'm planning a trip from Eindhoven, The Netherlands to Málaga, Spain in July and August. Covering +3000km and many mountains in the Alpes, Pyrenees, Sierra Nevada and other places I want to travel light. After reading through this thread, the TN Laser Comp seems like a good option though the Gogo Elite Tent is also very attractive.

The thing is that I'm turbo afraid to leave my bike outside. How do you guys do that? I'll be camping on campings and in the wild. Should I just find a big but light lock?

Assuming the bike werent an issue, it only leaves the tent. I cant seem to find the Gogo Elite Tent anywhere (note that I live in Holland but have been looking abroad) Then there is the issue of space, as it looks quite small from the inside, and I wish to be able to take my stuff in. Anyone here with experience with that particular tent?
For the TN Laser Comp I have the same question, as well as the question if this tent could be attached to my top tube, or stuffed in a frame bag as I havent yet decided on getting one.

    Thanks in advance.

Here a link to a Dutch touring forums. The topic name translates to ''Post a picture of your tent.'' Theres some neat pics in there.

  • Take off the poles from the bag, wrap the poles on the top tube and compress the tent bag to less than half the original size to put in a panniers/saddle bag.

Much easier I find than trying to fit the entire bag with everything in it.

Lockwise, a cable alarm lock that'll be useful if someone touched the bike, also make it trickier to cycle away.

Not sure if this is to be taken seriously. I googled for them and found some but they all seem quite fishy... On the other hand a long cable like that would make me sleep better if I were to lock the bike to myself. Thanks though for the hint on packing the tent!

I am still eager to know how much actual space these tents provide. Is it enough to store a person, backpack, handlebar bag and a 75'' TV?

tie some string to your toe and attach other end of string to bike

  • That's for fishing isn't it dicki?

  • I'm serious, the motorcycles one would be better thought, 110dB enough to wake up everyone;

Alarming Padlock with 3 Keys. Detects vibration. Great security measure. ~LOUD~ Pad lock for gate garage shed or bike chain PresenceUK brand.: Amazon.co.uk: Sports & Outdoors

That in combination with a cable like this? If they'd cut the cable the whole alarm lock concept would be useless...

  • If you intended to tour only in cities, sure, but generally you don't need to carry a hefty lock, I didn't when I went on a 3,000km tour with just a tiny luggage alarm lock, as long it prevent people from riding away, it's fine.

Not saying the countryside have no theft, just there's a lots less risk compare to cities.

Plus, lock the padlock with the frame as well, says, on the chain making it diffcuilt to ride away.

  • Hey- I have the Gogo ex. Lovely little tent, light and compacts really small. But it is cosy inside. I am 6ft2, 13stone, and while it is plenty long enough (and enough space at the head to bring my 38litre bag inside, it is very low- no sitting up. If size/weight is KEY then its a great tent, if not, then i prefer my Karrimor 2 man. http://www.sportsdirect.com/karrimor-x-lite-x2t-tent-2012-783056 Not much heavier or bigger to pack, and a lot more room inside for being comfortable

  • The karrimor would probably give enough room to put the bike, with the wheels off, as well

  • 1.16kg for a two person tent. I did patagonia in this

    Bam.

  • Thanks for the help guys. I decided to go for the TN Laser Comp and stuff it in a Revelated Design frame bag. (stolen idea from the bikepacking thread) damn that frame bag leaves me with so many options! Now I almost regret having spent €81 on my rucksack. It seems slightly too big (and not a great fit either with the plastic, but removable, frame) to strap to my seatpost like in this pic:

But I only had a quick look at it so it might still be possible if I get the fit right. I dont think I would want to go without this rucksack (Osprey Talon 22) because I just like the idea of having one with me for walks, grocery shoppings, rest days etc.

The thing is that I dont want to ride with panniers and with my Planet X SL Pro Carbon frame it is hard to find a suitble rack. I sent an email to OMM to ask if it one of their racks would be to be fitted securely on the frame but I have my doubts. And after seeing that pic of the rucksack under the saddle I kinda dont want racks anymore because I despise the looks.

  • going touring with a planet-x carbon SL frame? wowsers. I put a rack on my Sabath Ti bike with a couple of 20l panniers for a day as I was travelling and it felt really strange-definitely not designed for loaded touring!

if you're not carrying much maybe it'll be fine...

  • I'll definitely be traveling light. Maximum 12kg behind me and about half that on the frame and bars, using an Ortlieb Ultimate 5 Compact handlebar bag

Havent heard anyone about anything similar here. They seem nice to put stuff like wallet/passport etc. in because they come off so easy and have a clip-on shoulder strap.

Mike Hall also rode a carbon Planet X frame on his tour around the world. My geometry is a bit more racy but it'll do fine for a 40 day journey.

PS: You cant see it on the pic but the Orlieb bag has got this carbon white look which suits my bike like porn!

  • 12kg is nothing! That really is travelling light, would be interested to know what you're taking-i always end up packing far far too much.

one thing I will be taking on my next trip is a small collapsable fishing rod, so good sitting in the evening trying to catch some fish after a day in the saddle.

  • Ooh dont make me get ideas. Fishing sure sounds attractive!
I dont have an exact lay-out of what I'm bringing yet, but as I plan to cover some Tour de France and Vuelta a España cols, traveling light is essential. I'll post my setup when I get it all sorted out :)

  • Planet X carbon eh? Have I said I like you Machine?

Nice tip.....was wondering what to do with locking bikes while we're in the tent on a trip in northern France....this will do nicely....

  • I'm still not fully convinced. One could just pick up the bike and carry it away...

  • well sure, but pretty sure you would hear them doing it
