a mechanical watch is powered by a thigthened spring and the regulated unwinding of that spring moves the hands to tell the time.
a quartz watch is battery powered and regulated by the quartz crystal with it's precise vibrations. these vibrations are conducted through a computer to a motor to provide movement of the hands.
