  • Condor do one for £80.

Was talking to them briefly the other day and they seemed to know what they're on about.
Has anyone done one with them? £80 seems like a suspiciously good deal from a shop that's usually 20% more expensive than anywhere else...

  • I do not think that Condor is always an expensive shop. Some things are, some things aren't. On most small parts they are exceptionally well priced and have a good range of stuff.

My friend had a bike from there and rated the bike fitting. IIRC DJ has said it's not really all that / very basic / etc. From my experience some of the guys in Condor really know their shit, so if you got one of them I would expect it to be good.

(Equally there are some who really don't but they're more shop/sales people, as well as one absolute twat who may or may not know his shit, but isn't worth listening to - luckily he is easily identifiable).

  • I really rate Condor for small parts. You can generally pick up small fiddly things in there that other LBSs don't carry. As an example I got a canti-hanger in there last week and they had both 1" and 1 1/8" in stock. The prices on that stuff seems comparable to Evans or Wiggle, I generally find.

Anyway my girlfriend mentioned this £80 fitting last night coincidentally. If she goes I'll let you know how it goes...

  • ^^True enough, I get all my cables and inner tubes there.
How does the Condor fitting compare to, say, the £60 service at Cadence?

The way my legs feel at the moment, I'm thinking the most thorough service possible is where it's at, even if it's £150. But if there's a cheaper way of getting the same thing... etc, obvs.
^let us know how it goes if she does it, doppelkorn.

  • Does anyone have experience of the Condor fitting here? Or the Retul one at Cadence?

My flatmate desperately needs a fitting as cycling is agony for him at the moment - I recommended Scherrit, but they are full up until December.

  • Cheers. Updated.

£100 is looks like pretty good value if anyone has any experience of them it would be useful to know.

  • an old thread dredge...does anyone have experience of the bike fits that are around £100 - condor, cyclelab, freespeed or twowheels good?

  • Yeah, need to hear feedback about these cheaper fits please. I know as usual you get what you paid for but sometimes there is a bargain to be had.

  • My mate has just had a fitting at Condor on his non Condor bike. I think it's usually a +2wks wait but he got a cancelation.

He was really impressed. It's the only one he had but he said there was lots of ATD. He did different drills while the guy watched him. He was expecting to have to fork out a load extra for new stems / bars / etc.

In the end all they said he needed was inserts in his shoes, raised and brought his saddle forward to tidy up his pedal stroke and put his back in a better place.

The thing that attracts me about that price is when you can get cleats fitted / positioned - which I find are a PITA but are important. Some more expensive places charge a similar amount just for cleat fitting.

I think you need to decide what you want, need and can afford. Remember you also need to budget for changes to equipment.

  • Their hourly price works out very similar to Bike Whisperer and I wouldn't judge a fit until a couple of weeks have passed. Do they offer free follow ups?

  • That I don't know. I'll ask him. Does Bike Whisperer?

TBH I didn't realise the did fits for non-customers.

  • anyone had a bike fit done at Balfe's Bikes?

  • I had a Retul fit last week at Cadence. My first ever fitting but the fitter seemed happy (as you would expect) to make little tweaks here and there to perfect my position once he'd made initial changes. He also assessed flexibility/muscular imbalances etc. which was interesting. I had my bar and stem replaced with bar tape chucked in for free, parts were at a very reasonable price.

I had a fit with James at Condor a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to give it a bit of time on the bike before reporting back.

Price: £80 + £££s for shiny new parts

    Experience:
(This is now from memory so it may not be as accurate now)
Start to finish it was about an 1-1.5hrs.
It started with a chat about what type of riding I did, any pains, etc. the. Measuring the bike. Flexibility tests, some feet-type tests and cleat set up. Then it was basically watching me on the bike. There was little to no measuring of me. So cycling at different rates in different positions followed by adjustments, followed by riding etc. However it seemed to work well and the changes were thought out and explained to me.

    Changes:
Some of my setup was fairly close - same bar and stem. Changes were; stem hight (raised), seat hight (raised), saddle position (can't remeber), bar rotation (lower), and cleats.

The first and main change though was switching my stripped SLR to a Romin, due to my rocking and shuffling. It made a big difference, but obviously added to the cost.

I planned to buy new shoes and switching from Deltas to Keos. So those purchases were planned. But also mean I can't really comment on the previous positioning. I also had foot beds put in to bring my knees more inline.

    Overall Thoughts:
Positive basically. My GF thought it sounded like an excuse to sell me kit, but I found it useful. It's the cumliation of all those little things which I've struggled with and been trying to resolve with trial and error. I basically feel much more comfortable on the bike.

The low cost is what made it so attractive for me. I'm sure there are more technical and longer sessions that would go into greater detail and deal better if you had specific or complex issues. But I don't. I'm a recreational rider. Plus from a business POV they make money on selling you the new kit. Part of me did worry about that sort of stuff, but equally I'm sure those concerns go hand-in-hand with any bike fit... and at least in Condor you have a good range including a lot of fairly reasonably priced components.

If anyone has any questions, or if I've missed anything potentially useful out let me know.

I'll update my post once a few more weeks have passed. James said, "come back if you have any issues". I don't know if that meant free, and I stupidly didn't ask.

One thing I do really need to do though is translate the fit to my everyday bike, so I'm not fucking up giving it a fair chance.

  • Saw Swift cycles in a bike-fitting vid on the Guardian the other day.

Good service? How much does it cost?

  • There appears to be two competing Bike Fitting threads and I wasn't sure which one to dredge but picked this one.

I'm after a fitting for two reasons:

    1) I've had on-off arse/undercarriage pain for about 18 months and a newly awoken knee issue.
    2) I'm looking to buy/build my first "proper" geared bike (well two actually) and want to make the best informed decision I can about what size frame to get.

From the looks of it most of these services seem to cater to proper racers but I was going to get a fit on my S/S Pompino first then carry over the fit data to my new geared bikes. Will it be worth paying £250 for a "non-race" fitting or am I better off getting a cheaper fit?

  • Your goals and type of bike should be taken into account by any of the fitters so I wouldn't worry about 'race fit'.

  • Ah OK cheers.

  • ^^ as Hippy said, they'll chat to you about what type of riding you do and fit you accordingly.

On the difference between the threads...

... I started this as I wanted to get a fit and only a couple of names seemed to crop up on the forum. So I had a search around and ended up drawing up my own table of fitting services and their costs. So I transposed it for here as a reference source.

If you've got questions about your fitting, or how to fit yourself I'd use the other thread. Whereas this should in theory mainly just be,* "x shop also does fitting. I [ have/haven't ] used them [ they were good/bad/other ]"*. If that makes sense?

  • Doppelkorn,

try going to see Scherrit @ bike whisperer for a new bike consultation. its cheaper than a full fit session and should give you a clear indication of what to consider for your first geared bike.

I did it for my track bike and felt it was well worthwhile.

  • Anyone used Balfe's Bikes fitting service?

  • i'd always ask a fitter how many people they have worked on, is it something they do full or part time...

it will give you an idea of how much experience they have

  • Bump on this old thread , always fancied a bike fit , and about the only thing I can think of for an Xmas pressie .

Any recommendation , Maybe Sw11 way.

Be nice to have something I can use for mtb as that is probably where I spend more time ..
