It narrows it down quite a lot.
Have you stuck anything on the frame? -
• #1053
Is the chain ok? I've had one which made a clicking sound before. Check where you joined the links, could be a loose plate.
-
• #1054
if it clicks when not pedalling, how can it be the chain?
-
• #1055
one of these kryptonite mount things which basically has the lock mounted to it whenever its not locked up. mudguards but they're removable ones and the clicks were happening before those were put on
-
• #1056
lift the front wheel off the ground and swing the bars from side to side
(obviously not whilst riding), does it still click? -
• #1057
Have you checked your knees? clothing? zips? shoes? does the click happen on any other bike? I am really asking if its you clicking in some way......drove myself mad with this once actually turned out to be a loose chain ring bolt. but had to ride the bastard naked to find out.
-
• #1058
no it doesn't click; only when I apply downwards force, either on the handlebars or pedal. I'm 100%sure that its the bike!
-
• #1059
sure its a 'click' and not a 'creak'

if all else fails, take the whole damn thing apart, re-grease it and put it back together

having read a lot, things i've tried:
- changed pedals, crankset and disassembled, regreased and reassembled.

btw, teekayboy, did you get that reflective tape I sent you?
-
• #1063
could be inner side of chainring touching the chainstay as the frame flexes under certain pressures. I had this same problem with two separate steel framed bikes, problem solved by using Miche adjustable BB to move the chainring further away from the chainstay.

Try changing pedals. Simplest thing to rule out first.

This going to sound daft, but I had the same problem. Loud clicking or creaking noises when pedalling hard out of the saddle. I would have sworn blind it was coming from the cranks or the BB but I could not figure it out. Eventually, for unrelated reasons I mucked about with the seat post. After regreassing and refitting it the noises stopped and have not been back since.

I've got a creak that sounds like it's from the bar/stem area, but I imagine it's really the bodged on disc break guard I've stuck in the fork ends. It's survived a few months of polo so should be fine, and if something explodes, at least I'll know what the problem was.

I had a right annoying noise every time i went on the drops, looked at the bar.stem bolts, saddle seatpin, nothing, even those little nuts that go on the valve.
It turned out to be my coat zip on the end of the saddle.
(turned out it was my coat zip hitting the tip of my saddle ) !!!!

Your saddle has a coat?

Hi, since recently, my frame sometimes sounds like "a gravel in a can". Is there something to do or is it normal for an aluminium frame?

My Langster has developed a bit of a creak, which I think it coming from the bottom bracket or the cranks. I cleaned the chain and chainring which alleviated some of the grinding sounds but there's still a creak/click when I put pressure on the pedals. I've checked the crank arm bolts and I've also tightened the chainrings as that was the cause of similar symptoms on my other fixed gear. Any ideas what else I could try? I think it might be an issue of tweaking the chain tension?
-
• #1071
chain not in perfect line perhaps. iv had similar problems, also with tightening the chainring bolts which alleviated most of the problem, although my local bike shop suggested that my crankset was slightly bent.

Try the bottom bracket cups too. whenever i get the creak i tend to strip all components down for a clean and re-install them
-
• #1073
I have this going on in spades.
Basically disassembled the lot, degrease, cleaned and oiled things. Still happening. Only thing I didn't do was try repacking or replacing pedals.
Also, some say these creaks may actually sound like they're from, say, the BB shell when they actually emanate from elsewhere. Try seat post/tube interface too?

• #1074
Like Skully says, noises can rattle along tubes: I thought I had a creaky BB, tightened up the handlebars, creaking gone...

Recently went through something that sounded like a creaky BB. In the past, it has never turned out to be the BB for me, so this time I redid the seatpost / saddle, pedals, chainrings, rebuilt the rear hub, looked for cracks in the frame. Turned out to be the BB cups....
Nope but it looked silly.
