  • fuckin hell - these are $1500 with a steel fork?

congratulations to Tonic for having the worst website on the internet too.. Wow.

It's hard to justify putting anything less than Omniums or 75's on a 1500 quid frame

certainly not the happiest fella these days, hmm?

  • No, I'm quite happy thanks (my life extends beyond the forum believe it or not). Just staggered at the expense of these things, considering what that kind of money can buy you. Each to his own I suppose.

  • These frames are titanium right?

  • ^ nope 4130 chromoly

  • I thought tonictanium might be their neologism for titanium that's all.
I that case f_ck me that is expensive!

  • dan; these are usd$1000, not quid.

15p; they are true temper, and some 4130, still a tad ex, hahaha...

    sidenote;

anyone might know where i can find this in a 90-110mm? nitto mt-17

  • This is entirely IMHO of course, but I find that stem look a bit off on your build, especially the thick gusset that look out of place with the thin tig weld Tonic used on their frame.

  • ^^ that stem looks like it was put together with a piping bag. Ugly as sin for Nitto. Your Tonic deserves better!

What about the fillet brazed number,

Or the ultimate* (and how welds should look) a moots ;)

*not the ultimate, but bloody beautiful.

  • edscoble, b; hahaha! strong reactions.... i kindda like how "raw/old skool" it looks.

i've been looking at others, but i really wanted something with at least 10 degree drop, currently using the jaguar, and lovin it. that's why i picked the three above, and i was so excited when i saw the fillet brazed one, but 0degree.

the moots one looks sharp! but not enough drop.

    and the search continues....

  • might have just found it. but just some concerns, never had any sort of ti parts before, anything i should look out for? and would they be stiff enough? should cost me about 60quids, thereabouts. deal?

    USED-OEM – Seven Cycles Titanium Ti Beam Stem 110mm, 25.4 Bar Clamp 1 1/8, 10 Deg +/-

  • stems = alu

Everything else is just about looks, so if you're not buying an alu stem, just get what you think looks cool and is sort of the right size and length.

  • USED-OEM – Seven Cycles Titanium Ti Beam Stem 110mm, 25.4 Bar Clamp 1 1/8, 10 Deg +/-

but its not really a -10 as well, is it?

  • ^^Really? Maybe its placebo effect, but I felt a massive difference in going to a decent Ti stem (from a thomson X2 to moots in this case) I've been doing the same swap while dialling in my tonic and its definitely more than just appearance.

I should think the seven will be well made and quite stiff (for Ti) I'd recommend trying it, smooths out the ride on mine. Either way, it "looks" nice.

  • smooths out the ride on mine.

What about the handlebar? bar tape? saddle setback to minimised pressure on hand? tyres pressure + size? etc.

  • Okay..."helps" smooth it out. Still, with all the other you mention staying the same, and switching stems, I notice the difference.

  • but its not really a -10 as well, is it?

so HE claims, think it's more of a flip, but still it doesn't really look like a -10, have to take a look at it in person.

b; was looking at the seven stems, usd$5freakin hundred, seriously? are they worth THAT much?

  • -10 if you don't mind the stem bolt facing the wrong way round.

  • ^^^^^

    yea, it should be.

  • -10 if you don't mind the stem bolt facing the wrong way round.

    exactly this.

  • ^^Really? Maybe its placebo effect, but I felt a massive difference in going to a decent Ti stem

Yep, there's definately a difference. It's more expensive and not as stiff. I've only got experience of the ti stem I've got experience of. I'm sure others differ. But I'm not really sue what benefit ti as a material has over Alu for a stem.

I get carbon bars. But stems are so short (usually) and do so little that I find it hard to believe they can do much more than hold your steerer tube and bars together properly in a stiff manner.

  • Yep, there's definately a difference. It's more expensive and not as stiff..

Hah, yeah, well I certainly noticed that difference.

Sure, its a personal thing and difference in build qualities will be vast. I've used a couple ti stems, The moots is plenty stiff enough and perfect on longer distance rides, for me. The roads in cornwall are often a bit rough (my london commute not much better) so a bit less stiff = a bit more comfortable (to my mind) as long as its not noodley. I had a quill grammo that was horrible to ride, way too flexy, didn't last five minutes.

From personal experience, and a joy of riding in comfort, I would recommend a well made Ti stem, which I would assume this A-head Seven would be. If its for track, racing, or your riding requires/prefers a bit of stiffness, then yeah, maybe put your money elsewhere.

  • b; yea as long as it's not noodley, it's fine, use this for "recreational riding" aka chasing down roadies. hahaha!

ok, i'll arrange to have a look and update back. thanks!

  • ^ nope 4130 chromoly

Are you sure about that? The only reason I say this is that I have a Supernaut and a frame that I know to be chromoly. The tubes on the tonic are clearly thinner and lighter.

I've been out putting miles on my Supernaut during my week off and it's been a joy. Climbing hills even at the end of 50 miles is a breeze.

  • yes and 4130 can do that, i dont buy this 853/bling tubing wank

  • any reference for the 4130 point?

i asked tony to weld mine with a lighter tubeset normally used for tonic's cx-bikes and the 58-ish frame weighed exactly 1,8 kg. the main tubes are certainly not 4130 chromo as i've ridden many bikes built with these tubes as well.

not to say 4130 frames are not good or anything.
