Read your post again. "3rd and 4th goes into the playoff" Not a non-entrant, right? It doesn't matter what would happen "IF they played": either anyone can be a wildcard or all wildcard slots are based on Saturday seedings.
I don't put Cosmic in 3rd and 4th, I place them in the automatic qualification brackets and hence they (the same goes for SB, GiW, DR would have been in but the teams are different now) need not play a qualifier of which the Cambridge tourney is. Check the EHBPC 2012, they are one of the top 4 UK team in an international tourney no?
Exceptions in professional sports too, in the UCL 2005 season when Liverfools won the trophy and England were given 5 instead of 4 spots for 05/06 UCL.

Oh and a better example is Larry Kahn, who is a former uk tiddlywinks champ who isn't going to make it to the 2013 uk championships but has been allowed on the uk team because the uk TW Association agree that he is one of the best players and should represent his country.
I think exceptions are also made in athletics too?

That's team selection not championship qualification .

Can you give me an example of 'championship qualification' where x% of the qualifying team have to play in the championship?
If this was football, cosmic could field a team of ringers at the champs and then play in the euro's quite happily right?
In other words this is closer to team selection (where individuals prove their abilities) than champinionship qualies (where a team is just a name and can have completely different players at qualifying to the actual finals).

Cosmic ringers? IN!

The rules in football define the composition of a team and rule whether players can play for other teams in the same competition etc. So long as the rules allow mutually exclusive lineups then that's permissible.
In this bike polo championship, the two-of-three rule applies so as per last year they can field one line up at the qualifiers and only two of those three need to be present at the championship or wildcard. They still have to turn up and achieve a seeding, unless the wildcard becomes a nationally quota'd free for all.

Nope. Cosmic finished last year's quali with Ben, Zoe and Mat #justsayin

So, do I play as part of cosmic?

Hey I know, let's give Sheffield Wednesday the 4th Champions League slot for the English FA this year, it's a historical team and they've been top of the league before.
No, because they haven't qualified and the rules are the same for any english team who want to play in the Champions League.
Would it be the same as Hibernian representing Scotland in the first European cup even though the previous year they hadn't won the Scottish league?

The line up entered was Todd, Mat, Benn. Zoe subbed in due to injury. As I understand the rules, this does not constitute a change to the qualifying lineup of which two were in Paris.

So, do I play as part of cosmic?
I don't think the rules cover team name theft yet.

Above my pay bracket.
And skill bracket.
And other brackets.

Cosmic ringers? IN!
Beagle, too be a ringer you need to be good.

The fact that its an amateur sport is irrelevant. Most of cycling in this country is amateur and the same rules apply to all entrants in each championship.
By the way wasn't one of the women team pursuit picked outside of normal qualifying in the last World Cup? The young one?

Yep, a wild card entry, usually reserved for someone who did not qualify. Usually at the discretion of the organisers/governing body.

Oh my god this is so boring.
Told you it would be controversial though.
But... Cosmic have 3 routes into the championships that don't involve playing in Cambridge, and I hope they make it through one of them.
-
• #194
Ha yes this is boring. You could always put it did down to a vote. Let democracy win?
-
• #195
Yep, makes sense.
Saturday morning, 1 vote per team, should Cosmic get one of the wildcard slots.
Job done.
-
• #196
Of course this is all boring for the top players The big teams/names are going aren't they? Lets face facts, SB, getting wild, DR, and probably another 2 mixed up LDN teams will more than likely qualify. So for the rest of the uk it's far from 'boring' its shit or bust, on a knife edge if we get in or not. No one wants to go all the way to poland on the 'first come first served' rule. We want to qualify by right and it has to be fair.
There really does need to be a clear message about who's orgainising our route to the euros. It seems just Adam and John giving all the answers, and its boring for you Adam becuase you're defo in aren't you? So now John's calling a vote on Cosmic, is this the official word from the Cambridge organisers or what?

We are having a meeting on Sunday evening regarding the tournament. This will be one of the subjects brought up.

I'm just trying to be constructive and provide solutions. I'm only speaking for myself, not with any authority.
But endless internet arguments are boring, and don't provide anything constructive.
From a purely selfish point of view I'd like to see Cosmic go, because I think they offer us one of the best chances to earn more spots in future years.
Just like I'd prefer to see Man U play in the Champions League than Sheffield Wednesday, because they are likely to do better, and earn the UK a higher ranking.

Not arguing John, just want some clarity.
