Can you help to identify these frames, bikes or parts?

  • Ah, thanks for the seatpost hints. Really pretty concept totally wasted on those two commercial versions ;) I may try to make a layback post with a very short stem and some thick-walled stainless tubing...

  • 26.0mm.

  • Does anyone know anything about Sun bikes, specifically the Sun Solo.

Bought one as a cheap (£20) SS conversion and having got it built started wondering what I'd actually got. I suspect it's nothing more than a gas pipe POS.

Came with a mix of Sachs-Huret (deraileurs and shifters) , Sturmey-Archer (stem), Raleigh (Custom SR Crankset) and Maillard (5 spd freewheel) bits.

No braze on's other than pump pegs on the top tube nd cble stop for the rear deraileur.

    27" Chromed wheels.

No serial number on the frame that I could find, closest I could get was a number on the rear deraileur that puts it around 1984.

Decals on the down tube and seat tube say Sun Solo. Decal (badly applied) on the head tube says Sun Nottingham.

The most I can find about it is that Sun had a factory in Worksop (which is where I bought it), that was bought out by Raleigh at some point and which retained production of the Sun branded bikes while other Raleigh aquisitions relocated to Nottingham.

Elswhere I found one reference to Sun being used to sell rebadged Raleighs whose build quality wasn't up to scratch.

The bit that interests me is that Raleigh et al were ultimately owned by TI Group (as TI Raleigh) which also owned Brooks, Sturmey-Archer and Reynolds at the time, so there is a chance, admittedly small, that it might be a 531 frame. If it's not badged as such is there any way of telling?

If people are interested I'll put some pictures up when I can get at them.

  • cast or stamped fork ends/dropouts?

I think the Sun Solo is just a generic gaspipe frame.
Best ways to quickly check are...
    1) pick it up - does it way a lot or not a lot....
    2) Measure seatpost size 27.0 or 27.2 - might be 531... 25.4-26.8 probably gas pipe

  • cast or stamped fork ends/dropouts?

Stupid question, how to I tell the difference?

Weighs a bit, but not as much as I expected for a steel frame that size (53cm ST).

    Seatpost is 25.4mm

Either way I'm happy with it as a commuter. Lovely smooth ride, comfortable, and light enough that I can bunny hop it over unexpected potholes.

  • bunny hop it over unexpected potholes.

That's becoming ever more necessary in London's famous london.

stamped dropouts are pressed from a sheet of steel so they're kind of 2D, cast dropouts have raised features and are a bit more 3D

  • Sun was a Raleigh brand along with Carlton by the 60's maybe earlier. Don't know anything about the original Sun. The bike you describe sounds very similar to my first 'proper' bike, a Sun bought secondhand from Beta Bikes* in West Hampstead in 1974. Although nothing special, it took me round East Anglia, the Cotswolds and the south of France. A couple of years later, I joined a proper cycling club (Paddington cc) and turned up on it for my first club run. I'm afraid the embarrassment factor made me get rid of it and find a more suitable mount by the next run, which was a secondhand Mercian.

Sorry to get all nostalgic there. Your mention of Sun brought back memories.

    • You may know this company by its current name, Madison Cycles.

If any one recognises these frame characteristics I'd be thankful.

Serial No reads 12654. and is found on near side rear drop out and fork column.

Best I make out is that this is a c1954 frame. Maybe Viking???

    Really not sure though.

  • I've seen a viking of that era that looks very similar to that, especially the long ears on the seatstays.

  • There was a thread on here with small wheeled (maybe 20") fixed frames for adults. Not the cheap nasty ones, any ideas what it was?

  • ^?????

    Cycroc....
I think Masi do them too.

    Big in Japan.
(but then again lots of things are)

  • What is this model of Peugeot?
Can I make from this a good fix?

  • I've seen a viking of that era that looks very similar to that, especially the long ears on the seatstays.

Yeah serial numbers positioning/format match that of a viking.

But i'm not so sure, never seen lugs like these they are proving hard to match, possibly custom?

  • ^^ Not sure on the model - looks late 1980's
I once converted a similar bike to fixed - lots of people have.
    Here's mine

They make good fixed conversions, but you need to be careful about the bottom bracket (French thread) and seatpost (very small diameter) Not sure whether they have a funny thread on the headset, but mine took a normal* diameter handlebar stem

There's plenty of info on this site about the finer points of "fixing" a peugeot of this era and many people have done it and enjoyed the process and results!

*(that was the only normal thing about the stem, it was a shimano/cateye CELC with a computer integrated in the aluminium casting!)

  • Pugs were all BSC by the late-Eighties as were earlier ones for the UK market, so you'd be unlucky to get a French BB.

The seatpost is a bitch though: this is the recommended "I'm not spending £50 on a micro-adjust seatpost for a conversion".

    Thanks mate

  • That's his name! Don't you think his life is hard enough?

    >his
whoever said i was male anyway

You could be right, I am a fat old bloke after all, so maybe eatshit, well, you know, eats shit.

funny. but yeah maybe all spacemarines, robots, unicorns, hitlers and einsteins on the internet are actually spacemarines, robots, unicorns, hitler and einstein as well.

anyway, can anyone help identifying these:

  • What's the frames please?

Edit - found it.... Nabiis FTC

  • They probably ride ok but they just don't look right.

  • hey, I just got donated this frame due to a crack in the seat tube. I was going to cut it up and make a bamboo bike, but I think it could be a repainted colnago that would be worth getting fixed.... any ideas what it is and what it is worth? It has campag dropouts and a cinelli bottom bracket. Also all of the lugs feature this triangle shape which i think is colnago but i'm not sure.

Hi Wardy - I just spotted this being a newcomer to this forum -
Joe Waugh frames have a seriel numbers like MS0000 on the bottom. I bought a set of forks from a guy on ebay and I could have bought the frame as well (probably this frame). The forks are now going onto my Joe Waugh which did not have forks.

  • MS = M. Steel (probably)
