It sounds like the 44's are just short for you, and you'll probably find that your smaller toes will move more naturally in the 44.5's because by what you say, your wearing a size too short. If you stand on a piece of paper, back straight and both feet shoulder width apart you can get someone to mark yoru actual stick length using a ruler to vertically mark the heel extremity and the toe extremity on each foot - measure between the two poits and you're either

It sounds like a short shoe issue as opposed to an overall volume issue. Depending on your feet width the Mega may well be too volumous, and over time as the shoe settles out to your feet, it may feel very roomy and not as secure as you'd want.
