  • pics or it didn't happen

  • With how well you took the photo well is it, you don't need a higher end camera.

  • Just messing with it tonight, working out what everything does, really like it and will be testing it out tomorrow.

What I can't get used to is how the viewfinder doesn't change when focusing like a DSLR would... obviously. The EVF does though so I may use that for a while.

  • As in you can't tell if it's in focus or not?

  • It took me a while to get used to it, but I always used one central focus point on my DSLR so I was used to 'focus, recompose'. I enjoy the large OVF as you can see outside the frame lines; it helps me consider my framing when I can see what I'm choosing to exclude, through the viewfinder.

  • Me too, and the AF in the X100 is pretty accurate.

  • Yeah I mean, anything in the OVF is always in focus because its just a window. So the red non focus box pops up and I wonder why when it looks in focus to me!

I usually have the centre focus point selected and use focus & recompose too.

  • Shot from last Septembre.

Anyone have an opinion on the new Ricoh GR?

  • I have high hope for it as their past stuff were great, could possibly outshine the X100 even.

  • ^^^ Really like that!

  • Ricoh GR really looks like it could be a winner.

  • Lovely picture that Phil.

Going to try some of the lens correction stuff soon. Am I right in thinking it changes the perspective basically?

  • That beetle shot is brilliant, where is that?

Spenceey - it basically just corrects vertical lines to how they appear to they eye...

  • Morning kids.

So it's my girlfriends' birthday coming up, and she's expressed interest in a camera. She's got a degree in filmmaking and this is the prime reason for getting it - stop motion, documentary, maybe even music videos, stuff like that - so it'll need interchangable lenses and the ability to film long swathes of high quality video.

But she's also just started a job at this indie fashion label where she'll need to take high quality stills - behind the scenes at shoots, trade shows, stuff like that. I know for this she'll want a lens which does that bokeh thing, so I guess high aperture? Or is it low? Anyway, as long as you can buy a lens which does that.

I've a £500 max budget - ideally I'm looking for a possibly second-hand camera with lens at about £300 and spending another £200 on a decent lens.

Any recommendations/warnings? I was liking the look of the Panasonic G3, the Nikon D3200, and the Canon 1100D, all of which seem to fit the bill. What say you?

  • A 650D might be within your budget and is better for film stuff and has an articulating screen which is handy... The kit lens for it is quite good and has very quiet AF for video.

Anyone have an opinion on the new Ricoh GR?

Looks like it could be a corker. I never really got on with 28mm though... Been itching for a digital camera again lately, want to have a go with the dp2 merrill to see if 45mm is working for me

  • I fucking love the 41mm lens, it hit that sweet spot.

  • That is a good shout - I can pick one up for about £450 on ebay with an 'EF-S 18-55mm IS II' lens but can you recommend a cheapish prime lens I could pick up at the same time?

  • Make sure the kit lens is the STM variant... The standard 18-55 is Meh.

A good all round prime is a 35mm

  • Bugger, the STM variant puts it over £600 from pretty much everywhere. Might need to go for something a bit cheaper.

  • OK, get the normal kit lens but get the 40mm STM prime. Its one of the best lenses canon make and is the size of a body cap.

  • Ace, thanks much.

  • Can anyone recommend a good, free .exif extractor for mac that I can download?

I've just used online ones before but the pictures I want to check are embargoed and I don't want to upload them to some site that I don't know if I can trust.

  • I have a d3200 and it is great. Haven't tried much filming, but was able to pull off some heart-shaped bokeh (you'll need a large aperture, at least f2 to do this well) this winter with the 35mm prime lens. The filming has a limit of 20mins per shot, something to do with it being classed as a stills camera rather than a video camera for tax reasons? I don't have the standard kit lens, but Nikon's DX range are well known for being very good for the money.
