  • 48x17 is a nice general gear, 47x18 also.

Never ridden 48x18 due to the lack of skid patches, but I guess being a grown up that doesn't make a difference to you?

  • Not overly experienced with riding fixed on the road (possibly supporting your of claim of maturity), but good to know about them combinations.
The previous 42x15 (73.6 gear inches) felt too spiny, so will see how I get on with the current set up.

  • I think 48x17 is slightly higher that 42x15 but not much different, still, a good all rounder, it's what I used on my fixed tour through France.

  • I've got 48x18 on one of my bikes and find that to spiny. I think 48x17 would be a nicer gear.

  • Nice project the finish looks great, if you still need SRAM levers I have some I could sell you.

After looking on Sheldon Brown seems 48x18 is spinier than what I was on before, will get than chain shortened in hopefully stick with 48x17.

  • you putting an expander in the steerer?

  • Yes will do, think I've got one somewhere.

  • I feel let down a bit, you mentioned you will go ww at some point :(

  • The more I thought about it, it didn't seem to make much sense. I've got a nice light 'race' bike, so wouldn't feel much of a benefit after riding this. Also the thought of using it on the track isn't out of the question, and can't see a weenie build being much use for that.

  • fair enough.

  • That said, I'd be interested in what it comes out at in terms of finished weight.

Is this a 56 or a 58? Apologies if you've mentioned that already.

  • It's a 56, but will post up the finished weight when it's done. Still thinking Open Pros for the wheelset, so them and some sram s900 levers and that's pretty much it.

  • needs american classic 420s

  • Don't forget the SRAM levers doesn't have a spring in it, so it'll flop if there's no cable going through it.

  • or you can always use a biro spring.

  • Or just tape em :-)

  • I really like the look of this, so simple

  • Mike, could you weigh the Fundas before you chop them - and then compare to Vince's write up?

just want to see how consistent the weights are.

    Looks great btw.

  • Cheers, I can't help think the ec90's may look more complimentary to the frame being that they are curved but the fundas are growing on me. I will get them weighed before/after they are cut and write up a mini review, I imagine yeah it'll be useful to see how consistent the quality is.
On the levers front, the plan was always to use a Jtek DoubleControl S (http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/jtek-doublecontrol-s-prod19041/) so both levers operate the front caliper. If anyone has some 40cm fsa omegas do hit me up, I can swap them for 42cms.

  • The stock forks

    3T Funda copies
Steerer uncut at 30cms, so these will likely end up the same as Hambar's fake 3T forks (389g @ 230mm)

Due to the paint scheme and peace of mind I bought mine through ebay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271183479709?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648)

Still need wheels/ Open Pro CD's (maybe TB14's) narrower bars (still FSA compacts) and Sram S900 levers.

  • and black tape

  • By the time I've got the other parts it'll probably have turned black by itself.
