  • bought a b-stock set of these for a hunny. http://www.thomann.de/gb/esi_aktiv_05.htm

    suhweet.

next on the list, a decent all round condenser.

Well. All up and runing last night. First issue is mains/static interferance through the monitors. Nothing too bad but definitely there. Going to try a ground loop isolator thing on the mac power supply and see if that helps.

Second thing is that they seem very light on bass. Now I know that the idea of near field studio monitors is to reveal nuances and deficiencies in a mix but the fact that these particular ones are also available with a subwoofer (that I don't have) is a touch worrying. I found that a warm squashy compressed jazz bass played with a soft pick that sounded great though headphones was all but inaudible though the monitors till turned way up when it became boomy and boxy. Is this a good thing? I guess I won't know until I compare a headphone mix with a mix on these and then A/B them though a few different stereos. I am concerned that certain notes on the fretboard boom out and others all but disappear. That doesn't speak to me of a completely balanced and neutral reference speaker.

    Yours,

    mildly disappointed of Forest Hill.
