  • It's a basic bike, treat it like a beater, something to get you around, while saving up for a nice bike that you can treat yourself.

  • Well this is the thing - I'm commuting on my road/touring bike at the moment (a Trek Pilot 1.2) which is lovely, but a little overkill for commuting, and I'm slowly trashing it over London potholes etc etc. So I've got something to get myself around, and I'm looking to build something nicer! I'm willing to spend a decent amount on all the rest of the kit, just want to find myself a frame that's good, and I have literally not the slightest clue about how to judge a frame's worth (or even what a 'good size' is) etc etc.

Yes, they're not-quite-vertical dropouts. I'd prefer something horizontal but I'd probably use a chain tensioner anyway... Where would you look for frames? And also - forgive my naïvety - how do I tell the quality of the steel? It says it's chromoly steel, but I don't really know how to tell one steel alloy from the other, and what's 'better'...

  • They're simple dual pivots. It's unlikely you'll need to dismantle them.

There is likely a little corrosion/dirt in the center pivot (this one is the most exposed to road grime). Take it off the bike, take the pads off it, and shoot it with some wd-40 or gt-85 while actuating it manually to work it in. Then maybe even apply a drop of lube to each pivot, wipe off the excess thoroughly and re-install. It should be fine, and I doubt the corrosion on the spring is the problem.

This. 99 times out of 100 this sorts out any stickiness. If it's still a bit sticky then a period of immersion in a lubricant usually sorts it out that 1 problematic time.

  • I would nick the rack and guards, sell it on for the same as you paid, and then find a pompino

    .

  • Ta both... will try tonight. Might pop give the front a good going over while I'm at it too.

  • Hi guys,
I'm thinking of starting a new project and I was looking at the unknown PS1 ,what do you guys think of this frame?
    Many thank

  • roboto has an unknown, I am sure if you PM him at least once he will tell you

  • but the more PMs you send him the earlier he is likely to reply, so keep messaging him

  • ok thanks , I don't think I can PM yet as I'm new here, but thank anyways :)

  • well when you will be able to then don't stop, this guy loves PMs

  • I'll just pm him too for good measure.

  • haha thanks guys

  • Fuck you guys! ; )

Yeah, I have an Unknown. There is a thread if you search for Unknown with a load of rubbish written by 1000aa, but some good info for you too. I got my frame from the dude who runs the company in Seoul and it was a handmade version made as a prototype for the mass produced models.

The only difference I know of is slightly cheaper tubing and rough welds on the mass produced models. The geo is tight and loads of fun. If I'm right, the PS1 is the one with a curved seat tube. I'd probably try and get hold of one of the Level models as I just think they look better!

    Hope that helps.

  • Also you look like a badass when your chillin at the lights in east london

  • Aw shucks. Thanks!

  • typography sells countless bikes

  • Yuppies road bike circa 1999.
I thought it was a little too small in the seat tube dept but seems ok with un slammed stem.
Mostly DA7700, needs a more leisurely cassette for me I think.
The Spinergy Spox are light as hell but I think I'll get some less joke wheels when I can, maybe Mavic Aksium??
