  • Such sad news...
    Rest in peace rider.

  • So sad. Such a terrible loss of life.

  • Heartbreaking. So sorry for her friends and family.

    Can you post a citation?

  • Thanks coshgirl
    Such a terrible loss
Wishing Katherine's family and friends consolaton and comfort at this sad time.

  • oh crikey. this is so sad. terrible loss.

  • It's so sad, we're all devastated at UCL. I'm trying to remember when I last saw her, I think she congratulated me on my Viva, so a couple of weeks ago.

  • RIP lady rider. Got an awful shiver through my spine when I saw the black logo. Be careful out there everyone. x

  • Absolutely heartwrenching. Rest in peace Dr Giles.

  • RIP (again, now I know their identity)

  • RoadPeace and London Cycling Campaign are hoping to arrange a vigil in memory of Katharine Giles this friday at 6pm in Victoria street.
She is the first cyclist to be killed in Central London since Henry Warwick died in March last year. Her death highlights the ongoing problem with large 'off road' tipper lorries sharing the same streets as cyclists.

  • Ah man - these threads strike hard when the person behind the statistic is revealed. A sad loss for sure. A friend I never had but she sounds amazing. Sorrow and love to those who were close.

  • Just so people don't take this out of context, she's the first fatality in Central London since Henry but the 13th fatality within the M25 ringroad since then.

  • I was going to raise that. Too many lost at the start and ends of their journeys from the villages that make up this great city. All just going about their business. All real and vital humans with friends and failings. All missed. Sad.

  • Absolutely gutting, RIP fellow rider, my thoughts are with the family.

  • Just so people don't take this out of context, she's the first fatality in Central London since Henry but the 13th fatality within the M25 ringroad since then.

    13th !! Jeez .

    That's awful.

  • This is probably a discussion for a separate place but would people find it useful if I kept a closed thread updated with links to all London based fatalities?

NB. I'd love to do it for the whole of the UK but I could never guarantee that I'd manage to find them all as so many of last years only came to light a number of months after the event.

  • RoadPeace and London Cycling Campaign are hoping to arrange a vigil in memory of Katharine Giles this friday at 6pm in Victoria street.

Please let us know if this goes ahead. I'd like to stop by if it does.

  • I've just seen this on the guardian website and wanted to pay my respects - tragic loss of life

    Rest in piece.

@Object yes I think that would be a good idea, one condensed list of all London casualties possibly stickied at the top. It might be well indexed by Google and therefore come up top in Google search results a victim's family and friends are searching for. Something short and simple like name, date, location to make it easier to find.

  • [Vigil cancelled at family's request

We have a strong request not to have the victim's name associated with any political or cycle safety campaigning. We will respect their view. I suspect that they would not want a ghost bike either.
