  • Still got 3 years left to ride mine up here then.

  • Not according to Halfords...

  • HHSB fixeh folders

  • Sounds like JB has been reading the BS on BR....

  • Edwardz the electric bike trend in NL is quite new, when I was a teenager (too long ago) you wouldn't want to be seen dead on one, they were specifically for geriatrics.

But they seem to have become popular among commuters that don't want to arrive tired/sweaty (might not have showers at work)

I really cannot see myself on one though, unless my health is so bad I can't ride a normal cycle anymore.

  • I shouldn't ride a bike really, but still can't imagine spme electric clunky thing. The whole thing about fixed gear is lightness and simplicity.

  • I blame spring break for the proliferation of e-bikes.

  • What's a fixie?

Yoghurt. It's a culture, you see....

  • I don't think 'fixie' riding ever caught on in significant numbers outside of London and other major urban centres. Certainly in Cheltenham and Bristol where I ride I never see many other riders on the road. Sure there are significant amounts hidden away in Brizzle but in 'nam I see maybe one a week. The fucker is fast too, rides a Dolan with two brakes. Always catches me when I'm feeling lazy on the commute home

  • Edwardz the electric bike trend in NL is

The leader right now of the trend is Germany.. followed by NL..

I do the opposite. I tend to ride very clunky ill-fitting bicycles for commuting to max. the effort. Its like running with heavy weights.

I really cannot see myself on one though, unless my health is so bad I can't ride a normal cycle anymore.

I tried a few at a bicycle trade faire-- since I got a free invite from one of the e-bike advocacy orgs I felt obligated to have a look. I found that I could travel much faster without the motor than with as it quickly hit max. speed and even without the assist I would just pedal empty-- I even tried a model with the biggest motor they had. Its clearly not for me but its about the only area within e-mobility that seems to be catching on--- the Renault Twizy e-car is pretty interesting but since its classified as a motorcar its got the same parking problems. There are even people starting to talk about pedelec racing.

  • Used to commute on clunkers. Now I just pedal harder and have more fun. Friday is my clunker ride and can't say I want to go back for the other 6 days of the week... :)

Strange it was slower for you, then what's the point exactly? Bar maybe hills?

CTC did a pedelec test, well two people, two Giant pedelecs and hilly terrain.

They weren't such a big fan as with the hills the extra deadweight is an issue once the battery runs flat. So their concern was range of the battery. It runs longer in assist mode, but in sport mode it was flat pretty quickly.

Electricity and bikes don't mix for me, can't help it, don't like electric shifting either. You are moving away from all that crap with flat batteries and maintenance on a bike, then want to go back to it?

(Though a Ye Olde Dynohub to be pedantic is bikes with leccy...but you make it yourself. Dynohubs are good if you don't mind the extra bit of weight/drag)

  • There are a lot of attempts at serious threads on the forum... I just want to say, this one was not one of those.

  • Do A Serious!

  • ^^stop trying to shape the content. it's our forum, we'll do what we want.

Really depends.. with lights, traffic etc one is speed limited..

Strange it was slower for you, then what's the point exactly? Bar maybe hills?

E-bikes are limited to a max. speed of 25 kmh. On anything but steep hills I'm faster.. The steep climbs where I have problems I don't think these e-bikes would take in stride terribly long as their motors are limited by battery technology. That said.. I'm an experienced cyclist with trained legs and not the target group... For the target group its about more environmentally friendly personal mobility than the gasoline motorcar. As cyclists we think "bicycle" versus e-bike while the target thinks "e-bike" versus motorcar.

Electricity and bikes don't mix for me, can't help it, don't like electric shifting either. You are moving away from all that crap with flat batteries and maintenance on a bike, then want to go back to it?

I don't mind electricity.. I have battery powered lamps for night illumination.. I also have been known to use electronic metering... What I don't care for is electronic control. I don't see the need for electronic gear change as I also don't see the utility of 11 or more cogs in the rear..

    Obvs troll is obvs

    Feltchio reported.

  • Ding-dong the fixies dead!

  • Just because a 'journalist' or blogger decides to write an article doesn't mean it's the truth....or even close to it. It's written purely with unit sales in mind - not one mention of the popularity of existing clubs, groups and the individuals who choose to build their own off the 'Bike Radar'.

It maybe true that for every Fixie sold that 10 hybrids follow but you could say the same for Ford Focus's and Ferrari California's....does that mean the Supercar is dead?!

    Quick, someone write an article....

  • Quiche!

  • Quiche!

As much as I love Quiche that should have been Quick ;)

  • Flans for clearing that up.
