  • My concern would be that it would take a knock that would render it unfit to use and that I would be unaware of that having occurred.

  • If I were to get a helmet purely for the track (only because it's mandatory) what would be good? Is there some kind of minimalist helmet I can get?

  • I like the speed air more :)

On the track there is little need for anything sophisticated as overheating is less of a problem. Most of the best track specific helmets are tuned to provide good impact protection and improved aerodynamics. Since the design needs of a track sprinter is different than those of a road cyclist in a time trial the shapes need to be quite different. Since the market is pretty tiny there are only a few products for the elite level. Casco seems to nearly own it. They are all pretty "minimalist".

Precisely. And the chances that a helmet left bolted to bicycle "takes a knock" are extremely high. Bicycles parked in public get routinely banged-- and public ranks don't decrease but perhaps even increase the chances. The only "safe place" to keep a helmet during a commute is on ones head.

  • for the value and ease of adjustment (with or without cap etc) the Lazer 02 is surely the best. Especially in black!

  • I have the Casco Ares it has limited branding and crisp styling typical of good German design . It's quite versatile too I've even seen Teun Mulder sporting it on the track .

  • I forgot to post back here, but in the end I just dropped into BC and picked up a Specialized Tactic II (in fluoro green for bonus nodderness). It seems to be fine as a basic all-rounder, confusingly little to adjust - only chinstrap length and a single dial at the back, but seems to fit and is easy to loosen and adjust each time I put it on, which is a bit of a revelation for me. Makes a big difference to how comfortable it is.

  • Hmm not quite a soft helmet, but not ridged either

not sure about this, but I hardly use my helmet as it's a pain in the ass when out at the pub

  • any good lids for a big head? Mines 59cm...

  • I've just picked up a Specialized Prevail S-Works in Black for a bargain at £85 brand new, been wearing it for a few days now.

It's the first proper helmet I've owned so I'm still getting used to it.

My only complaint so far is the straps rub on my earlobes as I have stretchers in and they can be adjusted. Other than that its a pretty sweet helmet.

  • Bought the Giro Monza on a whim.

  • Good choice. I like the big vents Giros have. I've had two Giro's (Monza and Ionos), and two crashes. Both times my head hit the ground hard enough to split the helmet nearly in two, didn't even have a headache. Giro FTW.

  • +1.

I head-butted a car door a few weeks ago and my Giro Monza did its job (and broke). Thought it would be a good excuse for a flashy expensive helmet upgrade, then common sense got the better of me and I got a straight replacement. (It fits me perfectly, it did the job.)

£38.50 from wiggle at the moment. http://www.wiggle.co.uk/giro-monza-road-helmet/?utm_source=0997gb-23-tue&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=july&utm_content=gb-09-07-13

Cracked my Giro Savant last night, did its job well.

Now looking for something to replace. Maybe the Monza if I stick with Giro. Quite like the look of the Uvex's and Whisper though.

  • Liking my Giro Savant a lot. Bought in September so had it a while. Good ventilation in this heat!

  • ^ Certainly well ventilated and light aswell, I hardly knew I had it on half the time. Bargain at 40 odd quid when some Giros cost 3x as much.

  • I was going to pull the trigger and get a Giro air attack shield only to find out that they are no longer available due to Giro falling out with the distributors.

It's the only bicycle helmet i've liked the look of.

  • oh no- i was going to get one for next year's classics (viewing) campaign.

  • I've had a Monza and an Ionos, both did their job. Thinking of getting an Aeon but there seem to be very few in stock anywhere, I haven't seen anything about a new range or replacement model... [/GiroEvangelist]

FFS, so thats why CRC didnt have em listed.

  • Anyone know what helmet this is?

    Still available in Europe: http://www.bike24.de/1.php?content=8;navigation=1;menu=1000,5,70;product=42084

£190 though, which is a bit stern.
