bike shop assistants selling them the cables & assuring them they're fit for purpose.
I had a chat with the manager at work about that^. He said just tell them that they're ok, because telling someone that they need two d-locks at all times to lock their bike means they will be put off and not buy the locks at all. That and one of the best value locks comes with a 'free' cable. (Krypto evo mini). Logic seemed iffy, so I still recommend double d-locks.
Balls to that. I tell people that it's two d-locks or one d-lock and a Pitlock or they're buying at their own risk. Ever since someone who had a cable lock cut through came back and said it had been recommended by a colleague. I'm not sure I believe them, they were probably just trying to cut corners, but I'd rather lose a sale than sell something that will get someone's bike pinched.
Worst comes to worst just tell them to price match it, they'll normally get the locks half price anyway and can then buy two.
