This summer I'm going to attempt doing a slow meandering tour up the Grand Union canal and down again by a slightly different route, and a few other leisurely trips, health permitting.
It's because of my health that I haven't done this before, but also why I so badly need this to work out, as I want to prove to myself more than anyone else that I can get out of the rut sometimes, have fun doing so and NOT end up confined to bed by the second day in, even if I probably will end up in bed for most of a week once returned!
I'll be getting a frame bag made up by BikePack to keep center of gravity as low and central as possible, and debating using one of their saddle bags as a light bar bag.
Now can anyone recommend a decent touring rack and possible panniers?
Pack needs to be good for maybe around 25kg?
I really don't know what to take yet, but do want to camp where possible, so need things to be as light as possible (within reason), while still allowing a leisurely pace and to enjoy the trip.

how many miles can you really do along the Grand Union? didn't realise it was that long
-
• #75939
From London to Birmingham is only 140miles or so, but its not road miles, mainly tow path.
Hoping to do 320m (roughly) by coming down via Oxford, using other canals.
It's seriously weak but that's what I think I can manage relatively easily, as as I said, I really do need this to happen, or I'm going to be giving up on a lot of things I don't want to.
Not ready to except defeat just yet!

done a few miles on that canal my self, the terrain dose take it out of you, if i did over 50 miles in a day on it and id be pretty damn tired.

I was aiming more for averaging 25-30miles a day giving me a bit of a margin for error, taking two weeks in total (or three if it's going well and I fancy it!).

Sounds great! I have done Warwick to Stratford-upon-avon a few times, always a nice ride.

Hello you lot, I need some advice.
I have cracked the seattube just by the clamp on my frame (an 853 Peugeot CX frame). The crack was also made worse when my flatmate rode it to work (without asking). The crack is about 3/4 inch long.
I am assuming that the repair will set me back around £100 minimum and will knacker the powdercoat.
So I wonder, is it worth repairing or should I just move on and buy a new frame set? Should I take the crack as a sign that the frame might be fucked anyway (it had been raced).
Is this a decent frameset? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dolan-Multi-X-FrameSet/221162925768?ssPageName=WDVW&rd=1&ih=012&category=22679&cmd=ViewItem
If I go for frame only, is running inch forks in an inch 1/8th heat tube (with appropriate spacers) bad in any way? -
• #75944
I would have it repaired.
Also check diameters of both seatpost and seat tube.
The bike looks nicely dialed, not always an easy thing to do. -

No worse than using a 1" fork in a 1" head tube, but you'll need a http://chrisking.com/headsets/hds_devo and that only woks with conventional head tubes, not integrated. That Dolan comes with a fork anyway. Also consider a Planet X Uncle John if you're thinking about an aluminium CX frame, currently on offer at £245 - £295 (depending on size) with fork and headset.

I'm just concerned that I might be putting even more cash into something that might already be beyond its best - at risk of failing elsewhere.
I mean, I've already paid for the powdercoat and now that'll get fucked with the repair. Is there any real way of checking the rest out? 853 isn't exactly bombproof.
As for it being dialed, probably just coincidence, def need a shorter stem!

You could just repaint the repaired area, spray bomb even.
As for checking out entire frame, tester would know better, but if there are no cracks, paint creases or other signs of stress there's no reason other than crashing it that it won't outlast you. -

That's my favourite canal that.
There's really nice riding along the K&A between Bristol and Reading. Sustrans route 4 goes most of the way along.

where's the crack? if it is directly under the slot at the seat binder and straight you can quite easily/safely cut a slot down then drill a hole at the end. You need a long seatpost to extend a couple of inches below this though to make sure that you aren't going to put stress on that area.
