hope this isn't considered digging, but some rpetty sweet stems right there, i have the same problem, though slightly differing from the threadstarter.

love the alter but can't see how it could work, half the mind to bore out the steerer area.
thomson ones are decent but bland, but effective, last resort type.
anything along those lines to recommend?
