am looking for a tyre that will run well on the road and give grip on muddy bits too
CX tyre tread & compound is largely irrelevant - pressure determines grip. Unless you are prepared to run them at 40psi or less I'd get used to the idea of not having a whole lot more grip than those on normal road tyres.
If you want to borrow a pair of clinchers you are welcome - I have some cross kings, sammy slicks and CX Speed, the later being my choice for HOTN a few years ago, and were fine.
