Gazelle? Does anyone know anything about them?

    You don't want to know..
    It was painted with a thick coarse brush in an off white with horrible (waaaay to thick) red luglines. It was also labeled as a Giant with horrible decals.

    It's a real frame from the Gazelle-Campagnolo-Vredestein factory team.
    Leon Nevels was a good amateur racer.

    My dream frame, too, incl the colour scheme and decals.
    Even the size would fit me.
    My regular road frame size was 59 cm c-t, but track frames were chosen approx 1 cm lower. Top tube length and angles used to be the same for 57, 58 and 59, just a shorter head and seat tube.

    Just make sure it gets the right components.
    And then: keep pressure on the pedals and always turn left.

  • after your post above i had a little look at nevels he seems to have ridden for the gazelle team in the past and seemed to have been a pro / semi pro rider for a few years

    i have some old campy stuff at home but i like shimano ..... what do I do ?
    can i go dura ace or should i stick with record ?
    the stem on the bike looks strange ? is that rare or just a modern cinelli

  • Of course, old Record Pista will suit the best, certainly if you look at the history of the Gazelle teams.
    But Dura Ace will be fine, too. Nothing wrong with that.

    The stem is a couple of years younger than the frame.
    I guess a Cinelli 1A or 1R will fit better.

    Nevels was one of the better amateurs, but when he turned pro, he ended up in small teams and didn't do so well anymore.

  • I had recently my Columbus Tretubi Titan road frame cracked in my commuter so I managed to find new frame as fast as I could and blam, week after I have my commuter standing on 61cm Gazelle Champion Mondial A-Frame.

    I got this pretty cheap and it's in nice condition.
    Really long fork ends, 120mm wide and lack of all the road mounts make for a nice conversion.

    I've read the whole thread and I saw Dutch Cheese writing about 27.2 seatposts in CMs. Mine turns out to be 27.0.

    27.0 seat post is possible. Could be the paint inside and lack of reaming the seat tube. Could also be the variation of Reynolds wall thickness during the years. E.g. 753 was also changing all the time.

  • Okay, then it's an A-frame.

    Basically, all CM frames have the same (racy) geometry, however, some frames were built with eyelets to enable the assembly of fenders and racks. That may be a bit of a hassle, because it's also built for short reach callipers and with short chain stays. But that's the way frame builders have done it for years.
    The same frame was used (with some adiional braze-ons) for a fully equipped semi-race touring bike.

    Compare: "path" track frames, also with eyelets.

  • I think this is great because I could use that frame for little touring (do you think it would withstand, say 10-15kgs on the rack?) and if I'd need some more serious fenders I could also do that.

  • Depends on the rack and the bolts. Frame is strong enough.

    Not a gazelle and old compared to my build but what wheels are these?

    These are probably more what like I'm after, what are they?

    Anyone who has any more insights on TVM equipment, or anything interesting for sale please let me know!

    I've been very slowly working on this build for 15 months now! I do pretty much have all I need to do a half decent period DA build, but I'm in no rush, I want to get it finished right!!

    98% sure it's a Spinergy. This is a Corima 4 spoke.

  • Hi all,

    Back with an apology to Mr Cheese - i was relying on memory about the CM AB Frame - i got it out of the attic today and discovered it has stoppers and the cables are NOT in the tube - apologies for being an arse.

    I had a look at the shadow of the writing on the TT - it says Cornelis Tweewiecers on it - any ideas what this is or was? The frame is 531c and the forks 531. The serial number is 3317978. More pics -

    Any ideas which components would be good on it? And, are the decals which cover the join between the chrome and paint available anywhere?

    It refers to the the name of the local bike shop where it was bought ('tweewielers' means twowheelers, ie bicycles). The shop is called TACO, wouldn't be surprised if the 'Co' bit refers to Cornelis, while the 'Ta' might well be the first part of a business partner or wife's name, for example Tanja. Lots of older Dutch businesses use this somewhat quaint naming format, like Koga. The adress on the bottom of the decal still houses a bike shop with the same name and although it has Gazelle signs the focus seems to have shifted to scooters:

  • AB frame, 1989, also based on frame number.
    As mentioned before, both Cornelis and Taco are names of bike shops, quite close to eachother.
    So, either one has sold the bike when it was new and the other one re-sold it later second hand, or both shops are partners with shops at different locations.

    AB is an excellent frame set, but with lower "poseur value" that AA-Special, AA-Super, 753, 653 and stuff like that.
    So, in general, people with enough money rode AA-Special or more expensive with Record, Chorus, Dura Ace, etc.
    AB was mainly with 600, Ultegra and similar.
    But all variants were sold and ridden.
    I'm sure it's going to be a nice bike!

    Thanks for the info and apologies for being an arse re the top tube. It is newer than expected so i will ponder the components to build it - i have a full Ultegra group which i planned for a Van Tuyl but i think i may have other spare bits which might suit the Gazelle. I actually like the orange A Frame more - but it came with a variety of parts - Sugino cranks, Shimano Titleist front mech, Suntour VX rear mech, Suntour levers, Exage levers, Universal brakes. I was thinking of perhaps a Suntour group - i have BL NOS NIB rear mech and levers and am looking for a similar front mech now. Any suggestions about components for it??
