It's lovely. But it's fixed? Fecking hell, must be for terrain with no decents?

all Shimano MTB cranks are equally ugly
ORLY? What would you suggest as a more aesthetically pleasing crankset, as IMO there's nothing out there that's functionally superior to HT2 MTB cranks.

stem is longer than the headtube
Too right. Looks dialed to my eyes.

I could understand if you chose rs7s, but that is a very ugly crank set.

^The derailleur hanger is pretty interesting!
That mid stay position was the most common for pre war derailleurs and some French builders continued using them until the early 60s. Cyclo made them first in the early 20s and made millions. Apparently they worked really well but made rear wheel removal a pain so weren't much used in competition. Rene Herse made a rear hub in 2 parts which left the freewheel in the frame when you removed the wheel.
Fancy French constructeurs made hangers from tube to save weight and be flash and also would sometimes run the cables internally and conceal the long return spring you can see under the stay on that Porteur. -

The granny ring is wonderfully small.

Usually 46/30 (way before compact crank become popular in the early 00'), but that look more like 28.

Even if this is true (and it might be), that doesn't make them pretty. The XTR you posted is the MTB equivalent of FC-7900 - engineering brilliance styled by 1980s Sci-Fi book cover artists.

^That's my budget 29er and yes, it's fixed at the moment. Whole bike cost me about 200€ (frame, paint+parts). I'm going to upgrade some of the parts as soon as I get money for that. I've been looking WI ENO cranks if I could find them from somewhere for a reasonable price.

TB pedals on a road bike.
To the bin with it.
Since all Shimano MTB cranks are equally ugly, you could say that the FC-M410 at least has the virtue of being cheap, so he won't lose much when he upgrades to something nice.
