Why not?!
They are ill-suited to fomal occasions. Formal shoes are court shoes (pumps) and variations thereof.. save for highland wear.. where buckle brogues are de rigueur
And for some mess dress (george boots)
and a number of variations in between ... such as
Formal is nearly always patent or (better yet) box calf polished to a high gloss (which rivals patent).
