If maps closes, GPS stops as well. I don't know why you would turn it off?
(unless you use some apps that try to use it and you don't want them to - i.e., Facebook).

Meh, went for it. Got a fiver off my contract, 18 months, and the Note 2 for free. Overall that's a savings of around £200 instead of buying the phone and going to giffgaff. Not 4G though, which is the only ball ache. 4G contracts are pretty pricey, atm.

Anybody on here got the Sony Xperia Z yet? I'm curious to hear forum feedback.
Yeah i have this phone in white. So far i have no complaints at all and i prefer it a lot more to my iphone 4 that i had previous. The battery is just 100x better than that of the iphone and the screen quality is also alot superior. The size of the phone takes a little getting used to, but you become used to it, and its also alot better for watching videos and stuff on. The waterproof feature is also pretty neat.
I moved over to 3 from o2 and im on a cheaper tarriff, with unlimited internet and to be honest i get signal just about everywhere!

Yeah I mean Setting - Location - Google locations service option.
If you only use Strava/Maps with GPS, do you reckon it worth putting a GPS widget on the desktop to turn on when you need it?
I was about to respond but horatio is on the money.
It's not the GPS that's using the battery.

8.5 hours and it's on 80%... unless something kills it this afternoon I've found the problem - Google Now. FIGJAM.

So, I can get the Note 2 for free, the money I spend over a giffgaff contract is less than buying the phone new when spread over 18 months.
So, the question is, again, and I'm sure no one can answer this for me, but I'm trying again anyway: is it worth it? My S2 works fine... Argh.
Horatio, the S2 is an excellent little phone, but after that I got the Note 1, I then gave that away (one setback of having kids) when I got another upgrade, and that was how I ended up with the Note 2.
The original Note was demonstrably better than the S2,and the Note 2 is honestly so far ahead of the original Note, they feel like they're from different decades.
The Note 2 is fast like I never thought possible in a mobile phone. True, other phones now beat it for speed, but as a tool of productivity, it's unbeatable. And then there is the screen, which changes what you expect from a phone. Videos to go, and full films, that are easy on the eye.

If maps closes, GPS stops as well. I don't know why you would turn it off?
Sometimes I find it doesn't always turn off, possibly maps is still open in the background or something (on G Nexus). Also, when GPS is on, whenever I open Facebook it starts trying to locate me.
I use Tasker to turn on GPS when I open an app that needs GPS and turn it off when I close that app, once it's set up it's automatic.
Just tried turning off Google Now, it's good for the novelty but it's rarely actually useful I find.

Turn off all the location shite per app, GPS eat battery but it's easy to tell things not to use it unless you want it to.

Yeah I'd noticed the same on facebook - even when it's closed (I say closed I mean running in the background) it still keeps looking for my location.
Pretty sure twitter did the same actually.
So turned it off figured I spend more time in apps that don't need it anyway.

So, after disabling that piece of shit Google Now, my phone was on 52% after 16hrs, with light to moderate use. So, back to normal for me in other words.

Interesting, I'm impressed with my N4's battery use, I wonder how much it will improve if I turn off Google Now.
The only thing I've noticed it's useful for is alerting me when to leave to arrive on time for a calendar event.

Yeah, that was kind of interesting but I know I'm going to be somewhere and how long it will take to get there already and if I don't I will look it up anyway. GN doesn't know if I'm riding there or taking public transport so I found it less useful than some people might. I'd also rather have a phone that is on than one that tells me stuff I don't need to know :)

• #10994
That is a valid point! So how do you turn it off fully?
-
• #10995
Get into it by swiping up on the home screen and then click the little dots. There's a settings option. In there, you can choose disable.

• #10997
Thanks, should have just asked google now how to turn it off. Ha!

Did you also turn off location history?

Hello non-iphone people.
I am an avid iphone user. However, I am in need of a half decent smartphone to take travelling with me around Southern Africa. I will be taking my iPhone 5 with me, but will not really be taking it out and about with me that much, only really using it for keeping on top of my emails while connected to wifi, and checking messages etc on my UK number.
I'd like a smart phone, as a) I will be doing a fair bit of riding, so would like to have access to Gmaps, and b) I would like to be able to take some half-decent quality photos to post on my cooler than cool instagram.
Will be getting something second hand of ebay, and will be acquiring sim card once I'm out there.Having only ever used apple smartphones, what would you folk suggest as a fairly cheap, yet still half decent smartphone that wouldn't leave me devastated if it was stolen/dropped in the sea/eaten by a giraffe/lion/wild dog/baboon.
Thankyou kindly.
