  • I couldn't find any info on the rapha site, just wondering if anyone had any idea when tickets are out etc?

  • By the way, I will be raising money for charity, so if anyone wants to donate, they can, or be inspired to raise money for their own charity...

Isn't one supposed to do something really challenging when raising money for charity? Not a 100km bike ride...?

Edit: But well done for doing something for the greater good.

  • well I'll be doing it hungover and fixed, and aiming to do it within 4 hours - to most of my friends who will be donating, it seems pretty tough - sorry it doesn't make your standards

  • Nothing - as I don't agree with cycling for charity. Unless your name is Ed Scoble and you are cycling from London to Casablanca, fixed and unaided.

But like I said, well done for raising money anyway. Good cause too :-)

  • OK - thanks, it was an afterthought more than anything, I don't do corporate fundraising as a rule, it's a bit wanky

  • Sold out, have joined waiting list

  • guys who've done this before, do most people ride this on their sunday best steeds, or do people ride it on cx / tougher bikes?

i haven't ridden the event before and am thinking about using my surly LHT (on 32s) rather than my carbon ribble (on 23s). I just don't want to get dropped because i'm the only guy on a heavyweight!

  • It's fine on a carbon featherwight running thin slicks

  • thanks. it's running winter tires at the moment, so i'll give it a go. not exactly a featherweight but it's pretty sprightly.

It's a wapha event so i would suspect the former

  • I rode this last year and some of the sections were really bad, broken concrete farm yards and wet clay - I was on 25mm slicks with close clearances and I regretted it. I'll be riding 28mm treads if there's even a hint of rain in the preceeding days.

Indeed, I assume a significant proportion of the riders will be on brand new Trek Domaines etc for the occasion.

  • Have done it each year so far, each time fixed. 48/17 25mm tyres. Nice ride, but each time slightly more corporate than the last (the ride, not me). This year I expect the trend to continue. My advice - just go along for the ride. Registration is for losers, and of course now irrelevant as no-one will de-register, they'll just not turn up. Like for any other free-to-enter event.

  • If you have a cross bike, why not use it? there are definitely some sections where it would be advantageous. On 24c things get a bit skittish.

Just seen that this is on the same day as the London Classic. You can have my ticket, maybe probably.

  • Its a 1983 cyclocross Gazelle with schwalbe tyres for me :)

I did it on 35mm cross tyres. Felt smug but was mocked. Would have done it on 25mm on the fixed everyday bike this year, if I'd signed up.

  • On waiting list but will ride anyway

  • It's fine on a carbon featherwight running thin slicks

A fellow I was riding with last year was on a mint Cinelli Supercorsa with Veloflex tubs. Was doing fine until his fine stainless bottle cage snapped and then he punctured.

This is totally doable on a road bike/ fixed with no mods if you take it easy - more fun, if you have any mechanical sympathy, on a cross bike - rough surfaces/ off road sections much more fun if you can go fast and be confident that your bike is not going to break.
