Do you not have a phone backup in itunes? When you get the new one assuming you sync'd recently it should ask if you want to restore from backup and set it up the same as the old one with all content intact.

Yes, It's all backed up except for my photos from South Africa last week.
According to the nice girl in the Apple store, its a fairly common problem with the iPhone. The memory is built directly onto the motherboard, so there is no way of extracting the chip and placing it into another one if the phone gets damaged.
