Problems with SS gearing off road is that it can vary so much. Assuming a 42t front and a 700c, the appropriate gear could be anywhere from a 17t to a 22t, since you could be riding flat hardpack gravel or hilly and muddy crosscourse.
Thats why a 42/20 is often said to be a good medium.
Then there is a matter of taste. Some like it spinny like Thuekr (I know him), others like it hard like Adam Craig at the SS US nationals riding 42/16 on a muddy and slow course.
