Mmmm, have not bought the 20 yet, so could go to 42/21, which with my 700x30 would give me 53.8". Bang on the standard offroad SS gearing as Smallfurry quotes it.
Thats for MTBs. Although those riding proper off-road stuff tend to go lower.
Depends what you're riding. I find hard 35mm wide tyres need more accuracy when riding, then 2.4" MTB tyres. So I dont go so fast.
