  • I want to build up a fastish steel road bike. So far, I've looked at All City Mr Pink, All City Macho Man, Surly Pacer and TFG Wide Open.

Can anyone think of any other similar frames? Want to look at as many options as possible. Ideally budget would be around £500 for f+f if purchasing new.

  • sweet, I have balls for the cups too, just no axle

144BCD chainring bought now too! just let me know, may put a cheeky offer on some A* condition 7600 cranks at phil the power but we'll see

just thinking now I will bring some more regardless as spacing depending we might need smaller or bigger.

yes I am intentionally avoiding the word 'balls'.

  • ahaha, ok cool, i await your pm!

    a bike a month now jake ;D?

  • JB, 3 more from the top of my head

    Brother Reynolds Road Frame

    OSPREY FRAMESET limated sizes though

    Tokyo Fixed WIDE OPEN

  • Are there any rivals to the boardman? At the same 2nd hand price point.

Plenty, Pinnacle's CX, Genesis Vapour/Croix, Norco, etc. Matter of personal preference in which you like the feel of.

It depends what you want though?

If you want a do it all bike with huge tyre clearance, disc brakes, mudguard and rear rack mounts, that rides well in pretty much anything including light touring, tow path meanderings, commuting, full CX, and everything in between, I'd highly recommend the Boardman CX (the Cannondale caadx disc ultegra has better spec plus rack and mudguard mounts though).

Quite like the Brother, but can't help feeling that its just a bit 'meh' for the price.

The Singular is nice actually, but can't help but feel that I should've stretched to the Peregrine. Lovely frame in the flesh.

How flexible is the budget JB?

I quite like the look of this

I could probably stretch to that, but I don't like Condor. The only one I'd own would be a Lavaro.

  • this happened thanks to a u turn

then thanks to the great guys at Fitzrovia Cycles and a driver paying up this happened

which is ace. also got this (better photos)

And I bought a Moots, so might have to sell everything I have but we'll see...

  • Awesomes!^ have fun!

  • dibs gangsta

    Genesis equilibrium?

You could probably get a good deal on a high end steel frame if you can patiently trawl ebay/BR/ctc forums etc, if you could bring yourself to go second hand.

  • I need a 109mm x 68mm ISO bottom bracket (for DA 7600 cranks).

I'd like a nice one and I'm happy to wait for something to come up, but in the mean time I need something to get me rolling.

I was thinking of going for the Livery Design Gruppe one for £28:

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Definitely considered the equilibrium. The orange one is fantastic looking and good reviews too.

But I can't help but want a lugged frame.

  • For a 1x10 how best to set chain length?

  • Surely the same as youd have it if you had a smaller ring?

  • Like you have it, maybe remove one more set of links.

  • I had, initially, screwed the b-limit screw right in, as with the chain off that was the only way for the upper pulley to clear the cassette, but with the chain on I unscrewed the b-limit, and it's now fully out- the chain tension stops it from hitting the sprocket.

I do not, however, think that this is a good idea, but I'm a bit at sea with this- it works perfectly.

  • I took an old reflector bracket and made this:

  • Hey Dom I am running this. It is 111mm but I don't have any problems at all.

  • ^^ That looks quite smart Dammit.

  • old reflector bracket

    Hmmm..

  • 44T chainring and 11-32 gives me, I believe, 37.4" to 108.7".

  • Will that be for cross racing then?

  • If my b-screw and chainlength don't combine to rip the mech off and stuff it into the rear wheel.

EDIT, @BN- maybe, more for doing the South Downs way and pratting about in Epping Forest.
