  • You not playing tonight?

  • Jeez, I had that model in red, very similar but with Z1's instead of the fox, and sold it for £165 a year ago

  • I am upgrading my XC Hardtail and am pretty sure I have just about all the parts to start building, so I can start thinking about selling the old one. Can anyone tell me what they think that this bike is worth complete, or alternatively complete minus forks (which I'd quite like to keep)?

Specialized Rockhopper 17" frame from (I think) 2003, custom built by myself in 2010.

Fox Forks - Fox Float 100 RL (9mm QR). Steerer 200mm long. Has 110mm of stanchion showing and is thought to be a 100mm travel fork.

Deore Front mech and shifters, XT rear mech, Octalink V2 BB with Deore LX crankset (FC M571, 175mm, Hollowtech) 27 speed.

Halo Hubs to Halo Excite rims (with the following spares included - rim, 32 spokes and freehub body - basically a spare wheel minus the hub).

FSA headset, DMR V8 Platform Pedals, Corey Martinez Grips, Profile Bar Plugs, Supercross 2 Bars, Hayes Nine Brakes, Ritchey seatpost.

Maybe about £150. Probably more if you split. Let me know if you want to sell the forks.

  • Yeah mine was in nice condition with comparable spec, had crossmax wheels, deore hydraulic brakes and basically the same drivetrain. You would get more splitting but it would probably be a pain trying to shift half the bits

  • That's splitting it ain't it? They did say you'd get more that way. Although I reckon it's worth at least £200.

  • How much for the forks?

  • £100 for my TALAS R :-)

  • No - I kinda meant that surely the bike has to be worth £250 if for no other reason than someone one buying it for £150 (min?) worth of forks and wheels and taking the rest with the idea that it will be going in on ebay or the parts bin. I know I didn't say that but its what I meant.

What are the cheapest MTBs with reasonable or better condition Fox Forks that you've seen sold on ebay in the last few months? Gut feel is that very few go for much under £300 unless the forks are listed as fucked. Saying that of course few people are probably stupid enough to flog a 9 year Rockhopper with Fox Forks on ebay.

No need to carry on this unless someone has a vastly different opinion - reassured me that splitting is the way forward!

you can normally get ok money for forks and brakes on ebay. Old MTB frames wont get much esp in ugly colour unless it's something classic or high end.

You might get £30 per wheel. Maybe £20 for the rear mech. £8 for the pedals..

sold an XT front mech for £1.50 the other day. depressing.

I'd wait until the spring if you want to sell a complete bike.

  • How much for the saddle? I'll give you 10p, then you can call the saddle police and hand yourself in.

  • Epic longshot, but does anyone have the Cannondale castle nut remover tool?

    or

  • Fox forks finish off my MTB project, sweet as.

  • Any of you folks want (or know someone who wants) a lovely 1989 Rockhopper?

  • Bike's looking pretty sweet TM

  • Rides so good, took quite a bit of tweaking to get it right but feel really confident on it now.

  • Fox forks finish off my MTB project, sweet as.

    Nice - what's the frame?

  • Wide bars are the way forward for mtb!

780mm on mine. So much better control, lots of fun. I am 6'3" with wide shoulders and long arms though.

  • Nice - what's the frame?

Cheers, it's a Kinesis maxlight 2 I think, was repainted by previous owner...

As for bar width, wide is good, but it can get too much. Some modern DH bars are ridiculous.

  • ^^ Nice looking bike gridds.

I've tried both extremes of bar width and have settled on 680mm as a good all round XC width or about 710mm on a DH bike.

  • Think mine are 670 which I find a good balance....

Those grips on the other hand were terrible.

  • My all time favourite grip.

  • I had some lizard skins dual compound grips lying around which I've put on and are pretty good, will probs get some squidgy yeti's when they wear out.

  • Yeah it's mostly personal preferance but I'd recommend anyone trying some really wide bars, maybe play around with grip placement and/or just cut them down in small increments until you find something you're happy with. They do feel weird at first but you get used to it pretty quickly. I did have some 800mm wide bars on my DH bike but had to cut 10mm off each end to make them how I liked, then kept the same width for my hard tail. But coming from a mostly DHing background for the last 15 years my preference is for short stem and wide bars for all off road riding. It just feels and handles better.

Since BareNecessities like it, here's anonther shameless pic of my bike:

  • Do you find you have to lower/shorten the stem when you widen bars?

  • From DH and 4x background myself, I used to ride alot of tight jungle trails in Malaysia, and never progressed onto mad wide bars due to practicalities... Still like the idea of being able to fit through narrower gaps now.

Your setup looks great fun, do you find the single ring a little restrictive? or is it relatively rolling down your way?
