That's down to the owner of Speedplay being a massive dick though not due to any kind of poor quality in the Ward axles.
He has opened up legal battles with pretty much anyone who used his products name, from people selling second hand pedals on ebay to the big battle against Bebop because their pedals were the same shape. If you get bored and want to read into this a bit more look in here, it gets good on page 8.
