Is this thread really about TheSadR posting links to his blog? Has anyone been surfing much during winter?

My father had a Foxcub Mk2 like this
Which he replaced with a Timpenny 670 like this.
They lived on the Norfolk Broads. He moved to somewhere in Oz with a lake, but it had been dried up for years :-)
And that is all I know about sailing. -

North Devon usually (Croyde/Woolacombe/Puts) but venture a little into Cornwall if I have an extra day or so.

I bought a kayak from Decathlon (went in for bibs, came out with a boat, like you do) - have done sea kayaking but never on rivers.
Am looking forward to taking kayak to Italy in summer for use in sea and one of the great lakes but does anyone have any top tips/spots for stretches of water that would be good for starters, in/around London/South Coast?
Also: some kayak websites seem to suggest you need a river license or summat for inland waterways in UK - others, there's no mention. Do I really need one? Who is going to check it while i'm in said kayak? Or does not buying make you a bit of a c**t?
Ta!

Theres a possibility you'll get stopped at locks etc. if there is someone on duty.
I've mucked about a bit on the River Mole near Leatherhead quite near the house where the dude who is meant to check the licences lives and he's never run out. This was ~5 years ago though.

Best impulse purchase ever!
Some rivers you need a licence some your don't, only one I know for sure is the Norfolk Broads where you have to pay something like £15 for an small craft.
I don't think you need a licence for the tidal Thames but the Port of London Authority are the people you would have to speak to. Putney would prob be ok to launch, plenty of rowers about should you have any difficulty, tho they might get pissed off if you get in their way. Tidal flow is still quite fierce there so check the tides first.

I wouldn't bother getting a license and just get on via a public place.

Went kayaking in the Channel off the Kent coast on Sunday morning and it was glorious! Drew quite a crowd too of people looking at us, all wrapped up in coats and hats as we ponced about in shorty wetsuits.
Things I have learnt. The English channel is considerably harder to paddle in that an inlet of whatever ocean it is that surrounds little islands around Croatia.
Also: 2 person kayaks. Should the person who is better at paddling be at the front of rear...or does it not matter?

This morning, on Round the Island race with Artemis Academy, we saw lots of cool boats and Sir Ben Ainslie did ok... well, incredibly well actually and went round in under 3 hours. We did it in 7h.

Great photo. Missed this year but did '11 and '12 - looks a lot less breezy this time round.
-
• #317
You mean less stormy... It was perfect actually, I really enjoyed it.
Still had 30 knots max according to our computer. -

OK so not that different then. It's a funny course in a strong SW - nasty lumpy Western Solent upwind but then the sleigh ride round the back of the island is definitely worth it. One year we all lost concentration after Bembridge ledge and ended up going aground at Ryde sands trying to get out of the tide.

We saw a few people going aground, we were pretty keen not to do that, so we were watching the Ipad nav and the sounder fairly closely, in the end going in a straight line paid off and we overtook loads of tide chancers.
The wind was northerly, so it was reaching to the needles, gybe with spinny up, then a nice broad reach where we shredded the kite :( we then gambled on the 2nd kite shortly and then upwind to the finish.
There was a fair bit of land shadowing so we had to depower the top of the sails quite a lot to stay on course. Good fun though! -

Anyone have any experience of any of the surf schools in Newquay? Gonna go for a few days and keen to learn to surf...

All even in the Americas Cup at race 17.
Showdown.

What a calamity for ETNZ, but fair-play and tomorrow will be just amazing.
How exciting right? This has been the most exciting cup and the most exciting sailing I've ever watched.
Shame about Ben Ainslie being on the American boat, come on buddy, you've been knighted so you ought to sail for your queen on a commonwealth boat! -
• #324
True, but $10 million ain't no common wealth. It is amazing how the Americans have learnt the tactics of the Kiwis and developed into a slicker unit. I fear the ball is rolling too fast for the Kiwis now.
