Hmm, I broadly agree with you, but I think there is merit in a direct comparison of parts (vis wheels), as long as the test conditions are not ridiculous, and are replicated precisely for each wheel.
And, I suppose, as long as the test incorporates a rider, etc etc.
I might be agreeing with you a bit more, thinking about it.
