Yeah Joel as I'm still a student, I'm fairly flexible, especially on wednesdays, and it would be great to join you for one when my knees feeling better :)
Seriously, get a proper bike fit, while clipless pedals are fantastic for keeping your feet in one position, they can also wreck havoc on your legs if your cleat is not aligned to work with it properly.
My dad have two knees operation before he got a bike fit, partly because he crank it on the big ring all the time and partly he didn't think much about adjusting the cleat accordingly (which is pretty hard to do on your own).
Most especially on a rando/audax, John (the bloke you met with the small wheel roadie) can't do more than 100km before his knees become unbearable to even walk.
