I'm getting similar battery life without it, so perhaps not.
The biggest use of battery remains the screen.
I personally like using LightFlow, which on the Nexus 4 will change the LED indicator to different colours depending on the type of notification. Which means I turn on the phone less frequently, as I only now turn it on for important notifications rather than every notification.
