I find a tripod helps (pocket one in pocket, full size one in the car) and straightening / cropping at the enlarging stage. Recently started using PhotoPaint as well...
Many favourable reviews of Canonet ql17s - compares with Leica M6 etc. - if it works fine I'd be cautious about letting someone else fiddle with it.
