OK I'm pretty sure it's a bite now, having had a look at it - it appears to have a small scab/puncture wound on it. I'm going to keep an eye on it over the next couple of days. It doesn't bother him at all though he laid on his back and purred whilst I inspected it earlier.
Found a scabby lump on our cat's leg that she wasn't bothered about me prodding and poking but I wasn't happy and it turned out to be a bite or cut that had got infected. Vet gave it a clean out and some antibiotocs just as a precacution.
She then had a way nastier looking huge swelling at the base of her tail over Xmas that made it almost look like it was broken or something but it disappeared completely within a week. Tail bites are apparently classic cat fight wounds.
