Sorry to drag up all the old dirt, but I have to aggree with you about larger/smaller gears & ratios. I have only been riding fixed for about 15years but I remember trying this out on my first proper racer (road bike) when I realised that some combinations of front/back gearing were the same ratios but they felt quite different. My theory has always been that with a longer chain you get more torque.
