Thanks for your time and comments - I'll keep tinkering. At least there are more options now than 30 years ago!
Discussion over the last few days has also made it clearer (in my mind) that although 'lifting' the quality of older images and integrating chemical / digital processes overlap, they need to be considered as separate problems.
(goes back to pinhole cameras until head stops hurting)
