To be fair, I didn't actually ride through the thigh deep water. I was saved by a pressing need to change my socks and stopped up just before the flood. I was saved the endeavour by a couple of riders who where coming back after realising they wouldn't get through.
The ice was mercifully confined to back lanes between car tracks. Not really dangerous but made progress slow because you couldn't really predict what was coming.
My impression of the route is that it's a bit lanesy for a winter ride and might be better suited to later on in the year. I might revisit it as a Permanent at some point. Finding a good winter ride is difficult though.
