I have real trouble with my hands / feet in the cold. Heated gloves has gotten my hands to a bearable level, but feet have proven a bit of a problem. However, my GP recommended I try plastic bags. Now the weather has turned cold again I've given this a go and it really works. I'm using:
Merino socks > Ski socks > Sainsburys bags (with the handles cut off, natch) > spd shoes with multiple innersoles (to keep the cleat from sucking the heat out of my feet) > endra overshoes.
I'm amazed by how well this works. I wouldn't want to do it for very long rides as when I take the bags off there is some moisture trapped in there, but for communing it works brilliantly, so if you're suffering give it a go.

Whatever socks are clean > Sidi Diablo boots.
Job done even for hours of riding.

I suffer cold feet too, so use oversized sidi winter boots, with thin socks, thick socks and

SIDI Diablos and ski socks for me. I normally take a 43 Mega in SIDIs, but the 44 Diablos fit pretty well with the chunkier socks, and they've been good so far down to about -4degC.
SWMBO runs North Wave winter boots with Therm-ic electric heated insoles and batteries. They work well apparently, but they're not cheap.

Is this not asking for athletes foot?

So far I've not had any problems. As long as you dry your feet athletes foot isn't hard to avoid. If my feet were sweating enough to cause a problem I could probably forgo the bags anyway.

Cool. Sounds like you've found a nice solution. I wonder if those waterproof shoe cover you gat get for lab use etc. Would have the same effect while fitting better?

Who here suggested duct taping your shoes? I was amazed how much of a difference it made on my S-Works MTB shoes by covering up the vent, it also show how well ventilated the shoes are in the first place.
I'd still wear my overshoes for audax ride thought.

edscolbe uglifying cycling, quelle suprise!

The S-Works MTB shoes is pretty ugly in the first place anyway.

• #564
... which is why you bought them, right? :)

I have Northwave shaped feet, which leaves me in the weird position of owning both the most ventilated MTB, and the most ventilated road shoes on the market. While living in one of the coldest, wettest, climates in europe.
I actually offroad with those cotton belgium botties on. Which is probably a sin against MTBing.
Meh.

Is it just that you guys' feet get cold or that they get wet then that makes them cold?
If the later then shirley proper mudguards > any kind of waterproof shoe?
I've been commuting right through winter in Nikes. If it's really wet I'll put my Planet X neoprene overshoes on too.

And flap, lots of flaps, don't you forget.

Scoble's filthy, mucky, dripping flaps.

Merino socks, NW MTB shoes, PX noeprene over shoes. -11C, but dry and windless.
If my commute wasnt a mere 2 km. My feet would have fallen off.

Now that's some pessimism plus!

Be prepared! Plus my winter bike is going to be ready soon, which reminded me.
Anyway- winter bike will be Speedplay now, so I need new winter boots.

I would prefer to use an adapter to buying new shoes.

Current winter boots are SPD, that'd be a hell of an adapter.
