    Forks painted and first (very bad) coat on the frame...
    Going to need a fair bit of sanding.
    Also, the first set of stickers I bought were a stitch up so have had to buy more, argh.
    £40 on stickers... FFS.

    Ha, thanks, I think... Second coat going on ok, tough getting decent photos without a decent light source/on an iPhone.

    It's hard work but quite fun rattle canning it, feels crafty, after each coat hunting out blemishes and the like to sand down then re coat. The frames had a hard life so it will never be immaculate, but it's still fun...

    The Fauxnago forks are all finished now and have come out pretty well, not perfect, but 95% I'd say...

    What will you do with the stickers? Do they go on before a clear coat? Are they water transfers or self adhesive? I'd be interested to know what clear coat you use as well.

    Sticker wise... I have bought two sets, first were duds, printed on clear vinyl with no white backing so useless on anything but a white frame, and the ebay seller is being a dick. Second set, in the post allegedly, genuine NOS Colnago ones, rub on affairs, which will go under the clear coat, if they turn up, and are decent.
    The painting is quite addictive, the more sanding and coats the better the finish, it's all covered now but I think I might buy another can and try and get the frame even smoother... tempting fate, but could be worth it.

    I'm having trouble imagining the sanding part - presuming it's very low grit and a long wait between the coats so that it doesn't just wrinkle up into sausages?

    Will you be doing any lug-lining? I've always wanted to have a go at that.

  • Yep, yep, and yep...
    I'm leaving a few days between sanding/coats... depending on how hard I sand it down it goes from taking-the-shine-off to near-through-to-the-undercoat, and obviously it helps take out pitting etc on the frame, which there is PLENTY of. Really make a difference though.
    I'm not too in to lug lining myself and would prob just mess it up, going to paint in the clovers though, getting quite excited now. Shame the frames bloody bent!

  • I found a bulge under the down tube.... head on collision style... it's not toooooo bad, but not ideal obv.
    (still usable, may replace the DT if I feel flush in a year or so).

  • Power to you for stripping the powder-coat off and painting it yourself. Powder-coat is one of my pet hates. It's like thick custard being pored over all the beautiful workmanship. Many beautiful frames have been lost under a bland mediocre gloop of gloss. Well done. Looks great. No need to lug-line imho.

  • @luckyskull, 100% agree, powdercaoting is awful, and it was a cheap example by the looks of things. took about 3 days to get it all off, and two cans of stripper, all to save a tenner, brilliant.

    @I wish that could be true, if so I wouldn't have to post this pic...

  • That's very slight, I wouldnt worry about it - certiantly wont harm the integrity of the tubing.

  • Cheers dude, that's what I was hoping to hear, it's a bit more in real life (than that pic) but I am not too worried.
    Paint wise, it is SO ADDICTIVE. Need to stop at some point, but thats not final, thats sanded down, i'm trying to get a perfect new bike finish, which is insane considering all the pitting and dents, but it's just too much fun.
    Proper pics once it's done, but just filled another wee chip and sanded it out, checking how it looks on it's wheels, getting excited... (top tube is heavily sanded here, forks are final - will also clean up rims for build).

  • What rims / hubs you using? And what is that gumwalled tyre? I am thinking of going Panaracer TG's on mine...

  • You're not the chap I bumped into near the Tea building are you? I run TG's on my Raleigh and they are pretty nice and comfy (and puncture resistant).
    The Gumwall is a NOS Michelin Hi-Lite H.D. 20c, I may stick to black walls though.
    Hubs are Record Pista on to Campag Gamma, which were NOS until I got cabin fever one winter and went out riding on them in the wet, with a brake, FFS...
