Basically because the clip on bit behind the fork isn't long enough. I suppose they make it that length because it might not fit some bikes otherwise, but a longer front section (covering the front derailleur, as you say) would fit the Pearson and would be nice, I had a very gunked up front mech after my Christmas riding. I'm very happy with them apart from that though.
250 miles over Christmas got the bike rather muddy so it had a good wash yesterday. I've gone through at least half the brake blocks too with it being so wet and filthy :/
I'm still trying to work out how I got mud on top of my mudguards, I guess that was from riding through flood water higher than them...
