hehe yeah it was a TT cassette. Took XH up ditchling though so I couldn't pu$$y out and not try it. I was taking alot of HTFU pills,...this change will take my lowest gear from 50 to 30 GI. a breath of fresh air indeed!
do you think I'll need to add some links back into the chain for the wider range?
-
• #353
Possibly, see how it is, and there may be a slight chance of needing a new derailleur if it's a small cage one and didn't clear the 26t cassette.
-
• #354
Derailleur is fine, chain is fine, result!
-
• #355
Perfect.
Was a tad worry as older derailleur are often very short and are unlikely to even reach 26t like this Campag derailleur;

I kept on meaning to put a new cassette on it but i ended up getting used to it!

seeing as I'm keeping this, I want to slightly add to the stopping power.
would these be a crime?
or should I get better pads/shoes for the Athena brakes? reccomendations?
the old style pads aren't cutting the mustard.
-
• #359
They wouldn't be a crime at all IMO :) I'm a fan of using modern parts on old frames, especially when they have a pretty classic look anyway.
The calipers you currently have are some of the best looking that have been made for sure
-
• #360
true. and they go for big moneyz (but I wouldn't sell them and split the groupset)..I meant crime in terms of not having full Athena any more ;) but hey, I'm not after a period correct build or I'd be using downtube shifters or spratrer bars.
-
• #361
Won't be a crime, the performance difference in dual pivot over single pivot is very noticable that you'll only put a little effort in squeezing the levers to slow down dramatically.
It's also always worth changing stock pads to a better one like the Swissstop or Koolstop.
-
• #362
Or you can get the modern Athena brakeset.
-
• #363
True :)
stock pads on veloce will be miles better than the Athena blocks, but yes, pad upgrade would be good too

• #364
I did the same before on the Colnago with the same brakes as your, swapped it to Veloce as well, and despite being a lower tier groupset, it felt a lots better than the old high end Athena.
-
• #365
Or you could just do the front one and leave the rear single pivot. This config is an option on the modern groupsets above a certain level.
-
• #366
^I think mismatched brakes** would** be a crime!
But I see where you're coming from, with a comprimise on practicality/aesthetics, function of the modern front where the brake power is need, looks of the athena rear -

Nice frame, love the paint!

modern veloce is a very nice GS indeed, if you upgraded totally you'd really notice the difference, not just in brake performance.
or you could get a 5 year + old chorus 10sp GS from teh bay, that's what i put on the Look and it rides like a dream.

just another pic in it's latest guise shining in the sun, with new pedals, wheelset & cycle computer.

10sp
ain't gonna work on this rear spacing -
• #371
2mm either side, i think it should

ain't gonna work on this rear spacing
Oh it does.
If it's 126mm, then 130mm isn't a problem, no need to cold set it even.

12-21? bloody hell dude! the 13-26 will be a breath of fresh air.
