  • After losing about 5 stone since May of this year I'm now starting to get fit again and have started the 'Coach to 5k' series of MP3s.

So far have only done 2 runs this week but am pleased considering I literally couldn't run for a bus 6 months ago.

One thing I have noticed is during the run I'm getting burning discomfort / pain on the front of both shins. It's not intolerable but it's not pleasant. I've heard of shin-splints, I do have correctly fitting shoes appropriate for running. I am stretching my legs after each run. Is there anything I can do to alleviate the discomfort further or is it just a case of my body getting used to a new form of exercise?

    Thanks.

This is probably shin splints (aka medial tibial stress syndrome), but a mild dose. Things that help in the short term: rest, ice and ibuprofen or another NSAID of your choice. Longer term: stretching your calves, running through it, or see a physio for proper advice.
