Personally, I like most offerings from Maxxis. WTB make a couple of good ones too. I find Continental can be a bit hit & miss with mtb treads.
I'm using a Maxxis Ardent 2.25 front, & a Crossmark 2.1 rear which I'm liking. The Ardent comes in a 2.4, though most tyres of that size get a little heavy.
Schwalbes have a good reputation, particularly the Racing Ralph 2.4 ( quite light for the size ). I haven't tried them myself though, as they always seem a bit pricey.
The "good all round tyre" is the holy grail of mtbers. It just doesn't exist :-)
As Alkali suggested, an aggressive tread up front & something faster out back is usually a winner.
