I love a lot of European animation from, I guess, the last century.
I love stuff from René Laloux. For example Le Planete Sauvage

and Time Masters
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQKvL_VHE9I
I don't know what it is that draws me in but I think it's the combination of story, animation an design that do it. Moebius did the design work on Time Masters and it all looks beautiful.
Must also give a shout out to Leiji Matsumoto and the excellent Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem

^ reading through that list is really bringing back some memories.
I used to watch the Sci Fi channel at about 1am when they would show things like Dominion Tank Police and Neon Genesis.Hell yeah, completely forgot about that. Good times.
Re. Neon genesis, I have that as also macros plus and ninja scroll. The collection has begun.

Outlaw Star and Trigun are good too.

Redline was a recent acquisition and a fucking awesome film. Very much inspired by Akira, super stylish and fast paced, guns, fast cars, big bouncy Anime girls, magic and frustrated xenophobic alien robots FTEW.

so, having spent a fair bit of time in Akihabara I'm getting back on the Manga scene when I return to the UK for sure. Starting with a complete series of Drangonball and Dragonball Z. Anyone got any for sale?
Film wise, I'm not a real Ghibli fan, though Mononoke was pretty good.
I've also started a little list of free manga online here:

rub your eyes on it!

Only watch Ghibli due to the enthusiasm of my other half. Enjoyed Kiki's Delivery Service the most.
broomsticks vs bikes. premium rush 2>>>>> -

Is there anything that's on par with Ghibli films like Howls Moving Castle and Spirited Away?
Princess Mononoke is ok but I like all the weird monsters and creatures in the other two.
I can't find anything else that fits the bill, just end up watching Howls and Spirited Away again and again.
I've seen a few other films that are pretty good: Metropolis, Akira, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell etc but they're a completely different type of film. -

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Weird monsters galore. It's quite an epic.
-

I always thought Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind looked a little more serious than the other two, I'll give it a go this evening maybe.
-
• #65
It is a bit, but definitely a great film.
Try My Neighbor Totoro if you're wanting something more lighthearted. -
• #66
Nah seen that, was ok.
Anyone other than Studio Ghibli that's making this kind of stuff? -
• #67
I brought this cel from Akira a few years ago. It's the scene near the start of the film just as the as army is about to arrest the motorcycle gang.

Watched this night before last. Nothing like Howls or Spirited. Mediocre.
There are no other Studio Ghibli films that will work. I've seen most of the rest.

Try Laputa- Castles in the Sky (Ghibli). Unforgettable
Other greats I've ended up going back to several times are Sword of the Stranger, Ninja Scroll, Shadow Skill, Tales from Earthsea, Sin, and Blood: The Last Vampire.
*Both pretty exceptionally well animated

Whut?
VS this masterpiece? Trailer - Akira - Trailer of Original movie HD (1988) - YouTube
How can you POSSIBLY draw any comparisons between the two? Aside from the fact they're a class apart, there are no fast cars, only 1 slightly bouncy "anime girl", no magic or xenophobic alien robots and the animation style completely different. I doubt they drew any inspiration from Akira at all to be honest

Have you watched Redline? There's a scene that's a direct reference to Tetsuo's transformation at the Olympic site in Akira. I'm not saying Redline is better than Akira. Calm down.

Grave of the Fireflies is a great film. Not suggested viewing if you're feeling fragile though.
